Digital message boards on the highway encourages motorists to slow down and put the phone down

Labor Day weekend usually marks the “unofficial end to summer” with family gatherings and road trips — and if you’re traveling this holiday, we want to remind you to slow down and drive alert.

Over the holiday weekend, you may notice some overhead highway message boards displaying traffic safety messages reminding drivers to put the phone down and not speed. We hope these messages start conversations about safe driving behaviors and ultimately help encourage drivers to make better decisions behind the wheel.

While no state highway closures are planned for construction projects, stay alert and be prepared for unexpected incidents such as crashes or poor weather that can create travel delays. Pack an emergency travel kit that includes:

  • Extra water
  • Healthy snacks
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Prescription medication
  • First aid kit
  • Umbrella
  • Flashlight
  • Fully-charged cell phone

And before you head out, download the AZ511 app (free on Apple or Android devices) or check AZ511.gov for real-time traffic conditions and access the state highway camera system.
