The Arizona Travel ID can help you avoid a new federal fee

Arizona Travel ID

Stop me if you heard this before, but there is another federal development for domestic air travel coming soon.

Starting on Feb. 1, those who do not have a federally compliant credential like a passport or the Arizona Travel ID will be charged $45 for the new TSA ConfirmID service to get you through TSA security for up to 10 days. Any travel after those 10 days would require an additional $45.

If you don’t want to pay the $45 fee each time you fly, but don’t have a passport or some other federally approved identification, you may want to update your driver license or ID card to the Arizona Travel ID.

This credential is distinguished by a gold star in the upper right corner and is available to Arizona residents as a driver license or identification card. The card costs $25 and is good for eight years.

You can walk into an MVD office for this service, but we suggest scheduling an appointment and that can be done online at azmvdnow.gov. Even if you haven’t activated your AZ MVD NOW account, you can still schedule an appointment.

Because the Arizona Travel ID is compliant with the federal standards, you will need to provide extra documentation like a birth certificate, Social Security number and proof of Arizona residency.

So if you plan to fly on or after February 1 and still need an approved credential, the Arizona Travel ID can arrive in your mailbox in less than two weeks after your visit to an MVD or Authorized Third Party location

More information and a full list of qualifying documents are available at azdot.gov/TravelID.
