How It Works
The eTitle Transfer process varies depending on ownership:
Single Owner to Single Buyer (Standard Process):
- Both parties sign into AZ MVD Now and complete enhanced authentication
- Buyer generates eTitle Buyer Code and shares with seller
- Seller selects vehicle and enters odometer disclosure and eTitle Buyer Code
- Buyer reviews vehicle information and continues with transfer
- Seller releases ownership
- Buyer completes title and registration
Two Sellers to Single Buyer:
- Primary seller and buyer sign into AZ MVD Now and complete enhanced authentication
- Buyer generates eTitle Buyer Code and shares with primary seller
- Primary seller selects vehicle and enters odometer disclosure and eTitle Buyer Code
- Buyer reviews vehicle information and continues with transfer
- Primary seller sends notice to secondary seller
- Both primary and secondary sellers release ownership
- Buyer completes title and registration
Sellers, take the time to record the reading on your odometer; do not guess at your odometer reading! Proper recording is required by law and can help ensure that your vehicle maintains its value.
The process can be completed quickly and securely, anytime, anywhere. Once the transfer is complete, no paper title is printed—the title is stored electronically with MVD.
Important Information
Costs and Fees
There are no fees for sellers using eTitle Transfer. Buyers pay all normal title and registration fees before completing the transaction.
Transaction Timeline
The eTitle Buyer Code is valid for 48 hours and can be used for multiple transactions. However, each individual transfer must be completed within 24 hours once started, or it will automatically expire. Both parties can cancel the process anytime before the seller(s) releases vehicle ownership.
Vehicle Eligibility
To check if your vehicle is eligible for eTitle Transfer, sign in to AZ MVD Now and start the eTitle Transfer process. Your eligible vehicles will be clearly indicated in the list.
Currently, only non-commercial passenger vehicles are eligible. Commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles with liens cannot use eTitle Transfer.
After Your Transfer
For Sellers:
- Your old paper title becomes invalid and should be destroyed.
- A Sold Notice is automatically generated and can be viewed in My Documents on AZ MVD Now.
- A registration fee credit or refund may be available.
For Buyers:
- Your title is held electronically and viewable in My Vehicles on AZ MVD Now.
- You'll receive a standard one-year registration and a standard license plate (specialty plates must be requested separately).
- Physical plates, registration, and tabs arrive in approximately 15 days.
- You can print temporary documents immediately, or access them later on AZ MVD Now through My Account > Service History
Special Circumstances
If you need to apply registration exemptions (like tribal exemptions), add liens, or handle complex ownership situations involving power of attorney or divorce decrees, you should complete your transaction at an MVD or Third Party office instead of using eTitle Transfer.
Vehicles being sold must have current emissions testing (if applicable) or be sold to a buyer in a non-emissions area.
