When you buy a vehicle, Arizona law requires that you apply for a title within 15 days of purchase. You can complete this process at an MVD or Third Party Office or use AZ MVD Now for services like electronic title transfer, if eligible.
When a vehicle is titled it is usually registered at the same time. Most vehicles may be registered for one, two, or five years, depending on emissions requirements.
If you buy a vehicle from a dealership, the title is created at the time of purchase.
Did you just move to AZ? Here's what you need to do.
Do you already have an Arizona title and registered vehicle? Here’s some information on renewing your registration.
Electronic Titles—Safe, Secure, Convenient
No more paper needed. When you title or register a vehicle in Arizona, your title information is stored electronically and you no longer automatically receive a paper title. Similarly, when you pay off a vehicle loan, the title will be held electronically. View your title information in your AZ MVD Now account.
Title and Registration Transfer (Paper Title)
To transfer a title and registration, you must have these items:
- A completed, signed Title and Registration Application (Form #96-0236)
- A signed vehicle title or Title Transfer Bill of Sale (Arizona vehicles only) (Form #38-1306)
- A lien release, if applicable
- Required title and registration fees
- Additional documents for special situations, such as power of attorney and trust or other estate representatives
If you want to add or remove a name from the title and there’s a vehicle lien that hasn’t been paid off, written permission from the lienholder or lender will be required.

Vehicle Liens
Here’s information on various types of liens that could impact your vehicle title and registration.
Title Holding
After a lien is recorded on a title, lienholders hold the title electronically until the lien is satisfied. Once the lien is satisfied, lienholders will release the lien electronically, the owner is notified of the release and the title remains electronic. The vehicle owner must hold a valid registration.
Multiple Owners
When ownership of the vehicle is in more than one name, the Legal Status ("OR", "AND", "AND/OR") determines which signatures will be required to transfer ownership of the vehicle, license plates and fees; to apply for a refund; or to record loan information.
Mobile Homes
MVD issues certificates of title to mobile homes. There is a $7 title fee for each section of the mobile home. Mobile homes that are affixed to real property are not issued titles by MVD.
