Detour recommended for upcoming Loop 303 lane restriction

September 2, 2026

Westbound Loop 303 narrowed to one lane west of I-17 starting Sept. 9

PHOENIX – Drivers should consider using a recommended detour when a westbound Loop 303 lane restriction near I-17 in north Phoenix starts on Wednesday, Sept. 9, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Westbound Loop 303 will be narrowed to one lane between the I-17 interchange and 43rd Avenue from 5 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 9) through October. The restriction will be in place for bridge construction as part of ADOT’s ongoing I-17/Loop 303 interchange improvement project.

Heavy traffic and delays are expected, especially along the northbound I-17 exit ramp at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive. Drivers should consider using the following nearby detour:

  • Exit I-17 at the Dove Valley Road off-ramp. Travel west on Dove Valley Road to southbound 43rd Avenue to reach westbound Loop 303 beyond the lane restriction.

The $129 million I-17/Loop 303 improvement project, which started in February, includes construction of direct freeway-to-freeway interchange ramps. Crews also are working to add one lane in each direction along Loop 303 between I-17 and 51st Avenue. Completion is scheduled in 2028.

This is the first Phoenix-area freeway project to be funded under the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Proposition 479 regional transportation plan approved by county voters in 2024. Funding sources include a half-cent sales tax for regional transportation projects.
