I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project reaches significant milestone
PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation has reached a milestone on the Interstate 10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project between Phoenix and Casa Grande, completing construction of the quarter mile long eastbound I-10 bridge deck which is the part of the bridge that motorists will drive on.
Construction crews recently completed the final concrete bridge deck pour for the second half of the new eastbound I-10 bridge over the Gila River. It took crews about a month to pour more than 1,350 cubic yards of concrete for a span of about 62 feet. This equates to a weight of 2,734 tons or 135 fully loaded concrete trucks. Crews will next work on the approach slabs at both ends of the new eastbound bridge, the deck joints and the bridge barriers, which will include aesthetic details.
Replacement of the more than 60-year-old eastbound and westbound I-10 bridges over the Gila River is the first of four project segments of the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project. Construction on the two new bridges began in May 2024 and are scheduled for completion this October. Once completed, the new bridges will have three lanes and wider shoulders. They will also be taller than the original bridges, which will allow larger amounts of waterflow under the bridges.
All four segments of the 26-mile I-10 project are expected to be completed by late 2030.
