I-10/SR 210 Draft Environmental Assessment available for review

PHOENIX – A study to improve Interstate 10 and State Route 210 – and to connect the two important highways for enhanced access to downtown Tucson – is now available for public review and comment.

The Initial Design Concept Report proposes improvements for I-10 from I-19 to Kolb Road and State Route 210 from Golf Links Road to a future connection with I-10 along Alvernon Way. The Draft Environmental Assessment and Initial Design Concept Report can be found on the project website: azdot.gov/i10sr210study.

Members of the public are encouraged to review the study and provide input until Dec. 12. The website also lists locations where the report is available for review.

A public hearing on the I-10/SR 210 study is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Billy L. Lauffer Middle School, 5385 E. Littletown Road in Tucson. The hearing will include a presentation at 6 p.m. Members of the Arizona Department of Transportation study team will be available to answer questions.

The Draft Environmental Assessment examines potential impacts to the natural and human environments associated with the proposed improvements. There are several ways to share comments on the Draft Environmental Assessment:

The purpose of the study is relieving congestion and improving traffic flow on I-10 and connecting the east end of SR 210 (Barraza Aviation Parkway) with I-10 to provide an additional route into and out of the downtown Tucson area.

Proposed improvements being studied include:

• Designating Alvernon Way as SR 210 from Golf Links Road to I-10 and providing four travel lanes in each direction
• Adding a system interchange to provide access between SR 210 and I-10
• Adding up to two lanes in each direction on I-10 between the I-10/I-19 interchange and Alvernon Way
• Adding up to four lanes in each direction on I-10 between Alvernon Way and Kolb Road

Two alternatives are under consideration for expanding the number of I-10 travel lanes between Alvernon Way and Kolb Road. One option would build a collector-distributor road system between Alvernon and Kolb, with local traffic lanes providing direct access to interchanges and express lanes for through traffic. The study team is also evaluating a no-build option, the condition that would exist if ADOT did nothing, which also serves as a comparison.

Comments received during the Draft Environmental Assessment period will be considered during the Final Environmental Assessment.
