SR 89A partly reopens in Oak Creek Canyon

Drivers have access between Sedona and Slide Rock as repairs continue

Arizona Department of Transportation crews have made repairs to a large section of State Route 89A allowing drivers access between Sedona and Slide Rock State Park. Drivers are encouraged to be prepared for ongoing emergency repair efforts and should note that large vehicles may have limited opportunities to turn around due to space constraints. Parking along the roadway is strictly prohibited.

The highway remains closed beyond Slide Rock State Park north to the Oak Creek Vista scenic overlook at milepost 390 as significant repairs are underway for that section of roadway. Drivers have access on southbound 89A from Flagstaff to the overlook.

ADOT personnel have been working around the clock since major flooding damaged portions of SR 89A during last weekend’s heavy rainfall in the region. Oak Creek exceeded flood stage  and drainages overtopped the road undermining parts of the roadway, exposing guardrail supports and damaging pavement.

Several sections of highway north of Slide Rock State Park will require major construction efforts to restore the roadway to a safe and drivable condition. Some areas have experienced severe soil erosion under the roadway, and the highway in this region is flanked by steep, forested terrain, making repairs even more challenging.

Due to the extensive repairs needed and difficult terrain, a long-term closure is expected. At this time, there is no estimated date to reopen SR 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff. Travel between Sedona and Flagstaff is restricted to State Route 179 and Interstate 17.

Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 app (download for Apple or Android devices) or by calling 511.
