Westbound Greenway Road to reopen on Friday, June 24

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use Interstate 17 in north Phoenix to plan for continued closures of Greenway Road between 25th and 29th avenues, as well as on- and off-ramp closures at Greenway Road as crews make progress on the regional drainage system project.

  • Westbound Greenway Road between 25th and 29th avenues is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Friday, June 24.
  • Eastbound Greenway Road is scheduled to be closed between 25th and 29th avenues, starting at 9 p.m. Friday, June 24. It will remain closed through July 8. The following ramps and frontage road also are closed during these times:
    • The northbound I-17 on- and off-ramps at Greenway Road, along with the northbound frontage road between Thunderbird and Greenway roads.
    • The southbound I-17 on-ramp is accessible from eastbound Greenway Road only.
  • Detours: Drivers can use 19th or 35th avenues to Cactus or Bell roads to access north- and southbound I-17. To access Greenway Road, drivers may exit I-17 at Bell or Thunderbird roads and use 19th or 35th avenues.

Drivers should slow down and use caution around construction workers and equipment.

 

 

UPDATE: Plan for I-17 ramp and frontage road closures at Greenway Road beginning April 22

This advisory updates the planned Greenway Road at I-17 closure

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use Interstate 17 in north Phoenix to plan for Greenway Road to be closed between 29th and 25th avenues as work continues on a regional drainage system project. Drivers should slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place: 

  • Greenway Road between 29th and 25th avenues and the north- and southbound I-17 on- and off-ramps at Greenway Road will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, April 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, April 25 and again from 9 p.m. Thursday, April 28 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 2. The north- and southbound I-17 frontage roads between Greenway and Thunderbird roads also will be closed.
    • Detour: Drivers can use 19th or 35th avenues to Cactus or Bell roads to access north- and southbound I-17.
    • To access Greenway Road, drivers may exit I-17 at Bell or Thunderbird roads and use 19th or 35th avenues.
    • For access to Tuscany Pointe Apartments, a portion of the frontage road will remain open. Drivers may travel both north- and southbound from Country Gables Drive to the apartment complex. Motorists may also travel southbound to Thunderbird Road.
  • Eastbound Greenway Road at I-17 will be closed between 29th and 25th avenues from 9 p.m. Friday, April 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 2. The following ramps and frontage roads will also be closed:
    • The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Greenway Road 
    • The northbound I-17 off-ramp at Greenway Road remains closed
    • Detour: Drivers may use 19th or 35th avenues to Bell Road.

Reminder: The southbound I-17 frontage road between Thunderbird and Cactus roads, as well as the on-ramp at Thunderbird Road and off-ramp at Cactus Road will remain closed through late 2022.

Frontage Road Traffic Alert

Plan for extended I-17 ramp and northbound frontage road closures beginning Jan. 16

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use Interstate 17 in the area of Thunderbird and Greenway roads to plan for ramp closures beginning 10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16 and continuing through fall 2022.

ADOT urges drivers to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place: 

  • The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Thunderbird Road and off-ramp at Greenway Road will be closed.
    • Detour: Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues to Cactus or Greenway roads to access northbound I-17.

  • The northbound I-17 frontage road between Thunderbird and Greenway roads will be closed.
    • Detour: Drivers can use 35th and 19th avenues as alternate routes.
  • The southbound I-17 frontage road between Thunderbird and Cactus roads, as well as the on-ramp at Thunderbird Road and off-ramp at Cactus Road will remain closed through late spring 2022.
    • Detours: Southbound drivers can exit I-17 at Thunderbird Road and use 35th or 19th avenues to access Cactus Road. Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues to Greenway or Cactus roads to access southbound I-17.  
  • Northbound I-17 will have a right lane closure between Thunderbird and Greenway roads nightly Jan. 16 and 17 from 9 p.m to 5 a.m.

Periodic weekend and overnight closures of Greenway Road will also be required. ADOT will provide more details prior to these closures.

The closures are needed to install a new storm drain along the frontage road and connect it to the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel north of Dunlap Avenue.

Ongoing Closures

  • The southbound I-17 off-ramp at Cactus Road is closed.
    • Detour: Drivers can exit I-17 at Greenway Road and use 35th or 19th avenues to access Cactus Road.
  • The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Thunderbird Road is closed.
    • Detour: Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues to Greenway or Cactus roads to access southbound I-17.
  • The southbound I-17 frontage road between Thunderbird and Cactus roads is closed. 
    • Detour: Drivers can use 35th and 19th avenues as alternate routes. Local business access will be available via 28th Drive from Cactus Road and Metro North Corporate Park from Thunderbird Road.

ADOT advises drivers to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while work is underway. 

ADOT is constructing improvements to the storm water drainage system along I-17 between Greenway Road and Dunlap Avenue to reduce the risk of flooding when heavy rains occur. The improvements include constructing a new storm drain system to direct storm water into the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel, new drainage basins at Thunderbird Road, and removing the existing pump stations at the cross streets.
