Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation has initiated a project to install more than 250 miles of closed-circuit television cameras, thermal cameras, fiber optic cable, dynamic message signs, butterfly sign structures, a road weather information system, and other related work along Interstate 17 between Cordes Lakes and Flagstaff (mileposts 252-338).
Remember to slow down and use caution around construction workers and equipment.
Project Elements
The purpose of this project is to improve traffic monitoring and safety operations.
Project elements include:
- Installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, poles, foundations and cabinets at the following locations:
- Northbound (NB) I-17 at Cordes Lakes Road
- NB I-17 at State Route (SR) 260
- NB I-17 at Cornville Road
- NB I-17 at Pinewood Boulevard
- Southbound (SB) I-17 at Mormon Lake
- Installation of dynamic message signs (DMS), sign structures and cabinets at the following locations:
- NB DMS
- SB DMS at Mormon Lake
- Installation of wrong-way detection (WWD) cameras, poles, foundations and cabinets at the following locations:
- I-17 and Cordes Lakes Rd Traffic Interchange (TI)
- I-17 and SR 260 TI I-17 and Cornville Road TI
- I-17 and Pinewood Boulevard TI
- I-17 and Arcosanti Road TI
- I-17 and Arcosanti Road TI
- New WWD cameras mounted on existing DMS structures at various locations.
- Installation of roadside weather information systems (RWIS) equipment, poles, foundations, and cabinets as needed
- Installation of ITS conduit/cables
- Construction of a guardrail or a barrier to protect the ITS devices located within the recovery zone of the freeway or ramp
- Construction and maintenance pads at the two new DMS locations
- Coordination with the respective power service companies to provide power connections at the ITS device locations
What to Expect
Construction will begin late summer 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026. Work will occur off the shoulder in the ADOT right of way. Lane closures or restrictions are not anticipated at this time. Should a lane restriction be required, a traffic alert will be issued prior to the restriction.
