I-17 and Pioneer Road lane and ramp restrictions scheduled Nov. 2-9

 

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following overnight closures and restrictions in north Phoenix as part of the Interstate 17 pavement project between State Route 74 and Anthem Way:

INTERSTATE 17

  • North- and southbound I-17 will continue to be narrowed to one lane in areas between SR 74/Carefree Highway and Anthem Way nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Sunday morning, Nov. 2, and again beginning Sunday, Nov. 2, and ending Sunday morning, Nov. 9. 
    • NOTE: Work will start at 9 p.m. on nights when northbound I-17 is narrowed to one lane.

PIONEER ROAD

  • The southbound I-17 off-ramp at Pioneer Road will be closed nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning Sunday, Nov. 2, and ending Sunday morning, Nov. 9.
    • Detour: Drivers may consider using eastbound Daisy Mountain Drive to southbound Gavilan Peak Parkway/North Valley Parkway to access Pioneer Road.
  • Pioneer Road at I-17 will be narrowed to one lane at the same time as the off-ramp closures.
    • NOTE: Flaggers will assist drivers through the work zone.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation has started a project to improve the pavement on Interstate 17 from State Route 74/Carefree Highway to Anthem Way. The purpose of the project is to replace the pavement and to improve safety and the driving experience on the roadway.

Project Elements

  • Removing and replacing the existing asphalt pavement on I-17 and the interchange ramps between SR 74 and Anthem Way
  • Repairing and sealing bridge decks
  • Upgrading guardrails
  • Replacing pavement markings
  • Modifying existing sidewalk curb ramps and pedestrian push buttons, as needed, at the Daisy Mountain Drive and Anthem Way interchanges, to comply with federal Americans with Disability Act standards

What to Expect

Overnight weeknight/weekend lane restrictions and ramp closures will be required.

ADOT will provide information about restrictions and closures in advance so drivers can plan to use alternate routes and allow extra time.

Project Schedule

Construction began in June 2025 and will take approximately eight months to complete. 

Schedule subject to change based on weather or other unforeseen factors.
