Traffic Alerts - Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) Improvement Project: I-17 to Pima Road

Closures and restrictions scheduled through Jan. 30

Drivers who use the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Interstate 17 in Phoenix and Pima Road in Scottsdale should slow down in the construction zone and use caution while the following closures and restrictions are in place.

NOTE: Beginning Friday, Jan. 29, crews will begin diamond grinding sections of the Pima Freeway, starting with the eastbound lanes and interchange ramps between 56th Street and Pima Road.

What is Diamond Grinding?

  • Diamond grinding involves the use of specialized machines with diamond-tipped blades on rotating drums, which remove a thin layer of concrete roadway while creating small grooves to limit vehicle tire noise. This process gives the roadway a consistent, smooth texture.
  • Diamond grinding needs to be conducted under freeway closures, and therefore will be performed overnight and on weekends. The process can create some additional noise; however, the contractor is required to minimize overnight construction noise levels near residences.
