Loop 101 (Price Freeway) Pavement Improvements
Contents
Overview
Beginning in April 2024, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will be conducting additional diamond grinding on Loop 101 (Price Freeway) between the Loop 202 Red Mountain and Loop 202 Santan freeways. The work will further smooth the current diamond ground concrete pavement surface.
Background
In summer and fall 2020, diamond grinding was performed along the Loop 101 Price Freeway as part of a pilot program conducted by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) as the regional planning agency for the Phoenix metro area, in partnership with ADOT. Diamond grinding is a technique for preserving and rehabilitating the concrete pavement surface of a highway, in which closely spaced diamond blades cut small grooves into the concrete, smoothing the pavement and reducing tire noise. In late 2023, the MAG Regional Council approved the expansion of the diamond grind program for use throughout the Regional Freeway System in Maricopa County, where feasible. Additional diamond grinding of the Price Freeway was recently planned by MAG in consultation with ADOT to address community concerns.
