ADOT Update: Revised closure schedule for SR 24 project near Ellsworth Road

The schedule for overnight traffic restrictions and ramp closures along Ellsworth Road for the Arizona Department of Transportation's State Route 24 (Gateway Freeway) project in the southeast Valley has been updated. Restrictions are now scheduled as follows:

  • Brief closures of Ellsworth Road near the intersection with SR 24 are scheduled from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights for approximately four months starting Sunday, Feb. 21. Law enforcement officers or flag crews will hold traffic as needed while heavy equipment is crossing Ellsworth Road. Closures will last up to several minutes each time.
  • The westbound SR 24 on-ramp at Ellsworth Road (leading toward Loop 202) is scheduled to be closed from 9 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays on weekends between Feb. 26 and April 5 for a dirt-hauling operation.
    • Detours: Drivers can travel north on Ellsworth Road and access Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) via westbound Elliot Road or by using westbound Ray Road to northbound Hawes Road.

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, is constructing the Interim Phase II section of State Route 24 (SR 24) also referred to as Gateway Freeway. This section will include approximately five miles of a new divided four-lane roadway extending from Ellsworth Road in east Mesa to Ironwood Drive near the Pinal County line.

Weekend closures of westbound SR 24 on-ramp at Ellsworth Road start Feb. 19

Construction of an extension of State Route 24 (Gateway Freeway) east of Ellsworth Road in Mesa will require weekend closures of a freeway ramp starting Friday night, Feb. 19.

The westbound SR 24 on-ramp at Ellsworth Road is scheduled to be closed from 9 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays on weekends between Feb. 19 and March 29 for a dirt hauling operation. Crews will be working with large equipment to haul dirt in the area, including across the closed ramp.

  • Detours: Drivers can travel north on Ellsworth Road and access Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) via westbound Elliot Road or by using westbound Ray Road to northbound Hawes Road.
