State Route 30 Corridor Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), has initiated a project to design and construct State Route 30 (Tres Rios Freeway), a new freeway in the southwest valley. SR 30 will serve as a traffic reliever and alternate route to Interstate 10, crossing the cities of Buckeye, Goodyear, Avondale and Phoenix.

SR 30 will ultimately extend from State Route 85 to Interstate 17 at the Durango Curve. For planning purposes, the SR 30 Corridor project was divided into three sections: east, center and west. The center section of SR 30, between Loop 303 and Loop 202, will be constructed first due to its potential to relieve congestion on I-10. For more information about the east and west sections of SR 30, please visit the State Route 30 (Tres Rios Freeway) webpage.

SR 30 Center Section Construction Timeline

Design and construction of the center section of SR 30 will occur in phases from east to west, as identified in MAG’s Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan (RSTIIP), and is funded in part through Proposition 479, a dedicated half-cent sales tax for transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2024.

Anticipated construction timeline:

  • 97th Avenue to Loop 202 — starts FY 2027
  • Dysart Road to 97th Avenue — starts FY 2029
  • Estrella Parkway to Dysart Road — starts FY 2031
  • Loop 303 to Dysart Road — starts FY 2033

SR 30, 97th Avenue to Loop 202

This segment of SR 30 is in final design. Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027 and is expected to take approximately three years to complete. This project will create a new 4.5-mile segment of SR 30 between 97th Avenue and Loop 202. In addition to constructing SR 30, the project includes improvements to Loop 202 to accommodate the new system interchange with SR 30.

The initial SR 30 freeway is being designed to accommodate anticipated growth and future traffic volumes through 2050, with the ability to expand to the ultimate planned roadway configuration consisting of four general purpose lanes and one HOV lane in each direction, and direct connecting HOV ramps between SR 30 and Loop 202.

The project includes:

  • A new freeway with three general-purpose lanes in each direction
  • A new system-to-system interchange at SR 30 and Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway)
  • Widening Loop 202 between Baseline and Buckeye roads, and widening existing bridges at Loop 202 and Baseline Road, Southern Avenue, Broadway and Lower Buckeye roads, the Roosevelt Irrigation Canal and Buckeye Road, to accommodate new SR 30/Loop 202 system ramps
  • Traffic interchanges at 91st, 83rd and 67th avenues
  • New bridges at 91st, 83rd, 75th and 67th avenues
  • Drainage improvements and new lighting throughout the project area
  • A multi-use pathway from 97th Avenue to Loop 202
  • Noise walls where warranted

SR 30 project area: 97th Ave to Loop 202.

Project Schedule
  • The design phase for this project began in Oct. 2024 and is expected to be completed in fall 2026.

  • Construction is slated to begin in summer 2027 and is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

*Schedule is approximate and subject to change.

SR 30, Loop 303 to 97th Avenue

Construction of this segment of SR 30 is planned to occur after the completion of the southward extension of Loop 303 from Van Buren Street to MC 85, which is expected to begin in early 2026. For more information on the Loop 303, Van Buren Street to MC 85 Extension, please visit azdot.gov/L303-MC85-VanBuren.

This area of SR 30 will be designed and constructed in three segments:

  • Segment 1: 97th Avenue to Dysart Road
  • Segment 2: Dysart Road to Estrella Parkway
  • Segment 3: Estrella Parkway to Loop 303

Design for all three segments is expected to be completed in spring 2028 with construction phased from east to west and beginning in fiscal year 2029.
