Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation is improving the pavement on SR 87 from the Western Canal to Baseline Road. The purpose of the project is to extend the life of the pavement and to improve safety and the driving experience on the roadway.

Project Elements

  • Removing and replacing the existing asphalt pavement
  • Extending the southbound SR 87 left turn lane into Costco just south of Baseline Road
  • Modifying existing sidewalk, driveways, curb ramps and pedestrian push buttons at traffic signals, as needed, to comply with federal Americans with Disability Act standards

What to Expect

  • Overnight weeknight lane restrictions and daytime weekend lane restrictions. Full closures of SR 87 are not anticipated.
  • Cross streets, sidewalks and driveways will be closed intermittently throughout the project area. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained where pedestrian facilities are present. When crosswalks or other pedestrian facilities are closed or relocated, temporary facilities will be available.
  • Traffic signals in certain locations may be inactive during weeknight overnight work.
  • Bus service will be maintained, however, existing bus stops may be moved to an adjacent temporary location during reconstruction of the bus shelter pads.
  • Access to the Western Canal will be maintained.
  • ADOT will provide information about restrictions and closures in advance so the public can plan to use alternate routes and allow extra time.

Project Schedule

Construction began in January 2026 and will take approximately 12 months to complete. (Schedule subject to change based on weather or other unforeseen factors.)
