Contents
Project cost: $5.1 million
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation has initiated a safety project to install variable speed limit signs along Interstate 40 between Bellemont and Flagstaff (mileposts 185-195). When the project is completed, the new signs will be used to instruct drivers to slow down due to inclement weather or roadway conditions, such as a motor-vehicle collision or construction project. The project is expected to be under construction in late spring 2025 and anticipated for completion by summer 2026.
Project Elements
- Installation of variable speed limit signs.
- Road surface state sensors.
- Loop detector stations.
- Closed circuit television cameras.
- Fiber-optic cable in conduit and other related work.
What to Expect
Some of the work will be done on the shoulder of the roadway. There will be intermittent overnight lane restrictions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., when needed. Barricades and signage will be present to guide drivers through the work zone.
ADOT advises drivers to plan for possible delays while the work is underway.
