Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation has initiated a pavement preservation project along I-40 approximately 15 miles west of Winslow between the Two Guns and Dennison traffic interchanges (mileposts 230-240). The project is expected to be under construction in summer 2025 and anticipated for completion by fall 2026.

Project Elements

The purpose of the project is to rehabilitate the existing eastbound and westbound mainline pavement, shoulders and turnouts to maintain structural integrity and improve the safety of the roadway by replacing roadside safety features.

Project Elements Include:

  • Remove and replace the pavement on travel lanes, passing lanes, shoulders, and ramps.
  • Conduct bridge work, as needed
  • Remove and replace fencing, as needed
  • Construct American with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements, as needed
  • Replace and/or install traffic loop detectors, as needed
  • Replace and/or install delineators, as needed
  • Obliterate and install roadway striping, thermoplastic pavement markings, and rumble strips
  • Remove existing signage and provide new signage, including embedded advance warning signs
  • Trim and/or remove vegetation, as needed
  • Seed disturbed areas with native plant species, as needed
  • Apply fog-coat pavement treatment, as needed
  • Conduct shoulder build-up and median crossover work
  • Replace and install new guardrail
  • Remove and replace embankment curb, down drains and spillways as needed

What to Expect

East- and westbound I-40 will be intermittently reduced to one lane. Work will take place during daytime hours Mondays through Thursdays, and on Fridays as needed. Flaggers and signage will guide drivers through the work zone.

ADOT advises drivers to plan for possible delays while the work is underway.
