Project Cost: $12.2 million
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Town of Payson, has initiated a street improvement project along State Route 87 between Green Valley Parkway and Crackerjack Road in Payson (mileposts 251-256). The project is expected to begin in early August 2025 with sidewalk, driveway and ramp work. Repaving SR 87 will not begin until spring 2026. The project is expected to be complete in late 2026.
Project Elements
- Remove and replace the existing top layer of pavement.
- Construct Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk ramps.
- Reconstruct turnouts and driveways, as needed.
- Realignment of West Aero Drive.
- Construct and/or reconstruct stormwater improvements.
- Install and/or reconstruct traffic signals, as needed.
- Remove and construct new handrail, as needed.
- Adjust and/or relocate utilities, as needed.
- Trim and/or remove vegetation.
- Restore and/or construct landscaping, as needed.
- Address erosion control, as needed.

What to Expect
In the event a lane restriction is required during the day, a traffic alert will be issued notifying the public of the upcoming restriction.
Throughout construction, business access and a minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained. ADOT advises drivers to plan for possible delays while the work is underway.
