I-19 Frontage Roads Expansion Project between Ruby Road and Rio Rico Drive

Overview

Santa Cruz County, in partnership with the Arizona Department of Transportation, is in the design phase for a local project to make overall improvements to Interstate 19 frontage roads between Ruby Road and Rio Rico Drive. The project, located in Rio Rico, will start by making improvements to traffic flow in the area near Rio Rico Drive, with further improvements happening at Ruby Road at a later date. This project will provide better access to businesses, residences, Calabasas School, and emergency services along the corridor.

Planned Improvements

• Extending the two-way westbound frontage road from Calle Calabasas north to Rio Rico Drive via Camino Caralampi
• Widening and converting the eastbound frontage road to a two-way road from Kipper Street north to Rio Rico Drive
• Constructing a new slip ramp for the eastbound frontage road traffic at Rio Rico Drive to northbound I-19
• Installing lighting, signage, slip ramps and pavement marking along the east- and westbound frontage roads
• Installing traffic signals, pavement marking and signage on Camino Caralampi, Yavapai Drive and Rio Rico Drive
• Improving drainage infrastructure by modifying or installing box culverts, pipes, headwalls, scuppers, channels and retention basins within the project area
• Removing and replacing fencing, as necessary
• Removing and replacing cattle guards, as necessary
• Relocating utilities, as necessary
• Installing landscaping and erosion control devices
