Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation is initiating a project to install and connect intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices to the high-speed fiber optics along Interstate 19 starting at milepost 2, near the Nogales Port of Entry to just south of Interstate 10 (milepost 57) in Tucson. The purpose of this project is to connect the existing (ITS) devices and install new ITS devices at eleven interchanges listed below. This project will include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and CCTV cameras along the corridor.

The work includes installation of conduit and pull-box systems, fiber optic cables and other related work. Also, wrong-way detection (WWD) cameras will be installed at five of the interchange locations. Here is a list of the impacted traffic interchanges:

  • Palo Parado Road TI
  • Continental Road TI
  • Esperanza Blvd. to Duval Mine Road

  • Installing new ITS devices and connecting existing ITS infrastructure to the broadband fiber network within the corridor.
  • Repairing or replacing existing ITS conduit and pull box infrastructure where necessary.

What to Expect

Drivers can expect nighttime lane and/or ramp restrictions on I-19 at each of the interchange locations. Work is anticipated to take one or two nights to complete at each location.

No weekend or holiday closures or restrictions are anticipated.

ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to begin construction in winter 2024 and is expected to be completed in winter 2025.
