Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a pavement rehabilitation project in the summer of 2025, on State Route 289 from milepost 0 (Ruby Road) to milepost 11 (Peña Blanca Lake parking lot) approximately seven miles north of the city of Nogales.

Key Elements of The Project Include:

  • Milling and repaving of the roadway surface
  • Replacing pavement markings
  • Replacing guardrail 
  • Replacing pipe culverts and install scour protection
  • Removing and replacing existing loop detectors
  • Replacing bridge deck seals at I-19 overpass
  • Install new fencing 
  • And other miscellaneous improvements

What to Expect

  • Flaggers and temporary portable traffic devices will direct traffic through the project area during construction. 
  • One lane of travel will be maintained during construction.
  • Construction is tentatively scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
  • ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers and on the project website.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to begin construction early summer 2025 and is expected to be completed early 2026. Schedules are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen situations.
