UPDATE: Plan for lane restrictions on east- and westbound SR 83 in Sonoita beginning Oct. 27

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for lane restrictions on State Route 83 between Black Oak Drive (milepost 31) and Lower Elgin Road (milepost 29) beginning Monday, Oct. 27, as a new pavement rehabilitation project gets underway in Sonoita. 

Motorists can expect the following restrictions:

  • Daily lane restrictions on east- and westbound SR 83 between mileposts 31 and 29 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday 
  • Rolling lane restrictions as crews work through  multiple sections of the project area each day 
  • A flagging operation in the project area
  • A  speed limit of 25 mph in the work zone

Drivers should allow extra travel time, use caution, be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

Schedules are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation began a reconstruction project in October 2025 on State Route 83 from milepost 31 (Black Oak Drive) to milepost 29 (Lower Elgin Road) in Sonoita.

  • Removing and replacing the roadway surface
  • Improving erosion control
  • Installing fog coating 
  • Installing new signing 
  • Replacing pavement markings and striping
  • Replacing guardrail 
  • Constructing drainage upgrades
  • Other miscellaneous improvements 

Project Area

What to Expect

  • Flaggers and temporary portable traffic devices will direct traffic through the project area during construction. 
  • One lane of travel will be maintained during construction.
  • Construction is tentatively scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
  • ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers and on the project website.

Schedule

Construction began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed early 2026.
