Drivers should expect long delays and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for north- and southbound alternating lane restrictions on State Route 387 between Viola and Saguaro streets (mileposts 1-2) in Casa Grande from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Wednesday, July 1, as work continues on the State Route 387 (Pinal Avenue) and Viola Street, High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) project.

The following restrictions will occur on weekdays: 

  • North- and southbound SR 387 (Pinal Avenue) between Viola and Saguaro streets will be reduced to one lane. 
  • A 10-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place. 
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph.
  • No work is scheduled to take place on the holiday weekend from Friday, July 3, through Monday, July 6.

Drivers should plan for long delays, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation began a project to install High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signals across State Route 387 (Pinal Avenue) at Viola Street in the city of Casa Grande in January 2026. The purpose of the project is to improve safety by providing a designated, protected crossing location across SR 387 (Pinal Avenue).

What To Expect

  • Traffic along SR 387 will be maintained, lane closures are anticipated during the installation of signal poles.
  • Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction area.
  • Construction work is tentatively scheduled from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Expect temporary delays as traffic is redirected through a single travel lane.
  • ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.

Schedule

Construction on this project began in January 2026 and is projected to be completed in summer 2026. Schedules are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
