Overview
The I-17 Improvement Project covered a 23-mile section of Interstate 17 between Anthem Way and Sunset Point. Construction began in September 2022 and was completed in December 2025. This I-17 corridor north of the Phoenix metropolitan area sees more than one million travelers annually, making it one of the most heavily traveled roadways in Arizona.
Project Elements
- Remove the existing bridge and build a new one
- Remove and replace the guardrails within the project limits
- Install new pavement markings on SR 82
What to Expect During Construction
- Motorists should prepare for delays during peak travel times.
- Motorists should expect 24/7 lane restrictions as traffic is reduced to a single alternating lane.
- Traffic will be shifted during construction to allow crews to work on one side of the bridge at a time.
- Temporary traffic signals at both ends of the bridge will be used to regulate traffic in each direction.
- During construction, a 10-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
- The speed limit will be reduced to 25 MPH.
- ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers.

Project Timeline
Work on this project is anticipated to start in fall 2026 and is expected to be completed by fall 2028. The schedule is subject to change based on weather or other unforeseen factors.
