Crews continued much-needed project to smooth the ride

PHOENIX – Northbound Interstate 17 has reopened early between Happy Valley Road and Loop 303 following weekend pavement work, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Continuing a much-needed project to improve the ride on 6 miles of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74, crews removed a top layer of older, worn asphalt pavement before advancing to work to smooth the remaining concrete surface through a process called diamond grinding. Diamond grinding has been used in recent years to create a smoother and more durable road surface on a number of Phoenix-area freeways, including I-10, I-17, Loop 101 and Loop 202.

The I-17 pavement work between SR 74 and Happy Valley Road is separate from the I-17 Improvement Project currently underway north of Anthem Way. For more information about that larger project visit improvingi17.com

Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the az511 app or by calling 511.

Detour map for southbound I-17 closure

The Arizona Department of Transportation knows from experience that there’s never a good time to close a busy freeway such as Interstate 17, especially on weekends. So here’s an overview for those who travel on I-17 in the area between Loop 101 and State Route 74 in north Phoenix: Please set aside extra travel time and try to avoid peak driving times when closures are scheduled for a pavement improvement project that’s starting in that area.

We also want to point out that this project is not related to the larger I-17 widening project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point.

The first closure for this pavement project is set along southbound I-17 between the SR 74/Carefree Highway interchange and Loop 303 from 10 p.m. Friday, May 10, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 13. That means if you’re planning a southbound trip in that area you should allow at least an extra 30 minutes for slow conditions approaching the closure. You might want to travel during the early morning hours or later at night, when overall traffic will be lighter.

Expect a northbound I-17 closure between Loop 303 and SR 74 the weekend of May 17-20. ADOT will not schedule any freeway closures over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Drivers should still anticipate closures continuing in late May and June. Other closures will be needed as the year and the pavement work progresses.

Weather permitting, the ADOT project team anticipates most of the pavement work, including restrictions on weeknights, will be completed by late this year. We’ve set aside a year for all the work to be finished.

In all, this project stretches along 6 miles of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and SR 74. The early work will primarily involve removing the top layer of older, worn asphalt paving along the highway. The other major work element involves the use of specialized equipment to diamond grind the concrete pavement.

Diamond tipped blades on rotating drums in the diamond grinding machines remove a thin layer of the concrete to provide a fresh, smooth surface while also creating grooves that help limit tire noise. We have more information about diamond grinding on our website.

ADOT also will provide updated information about scheduled closures or lane restrictions. We invite you to subscribe to updates by visiting the I-17 Black Canyon Freeway (I-10 to SR 74) website. You’ll receive emailed updates about planned restrictions for this important pavement improvement project.

Thanks for your patience as ADOT works on this challenging but important project to improve the pavement along I-17.

ADOT also sets closure dates for three White Mountains highways

PHOENIX – As happens every winter because of heavy snowfall in the area, the Arizona Department of Transportation will close State Route 67 between Jacob Lake (US 89A) and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park on Monday, Dec. 4.

The highway reopens each spring, usually around mid-May, along with visitor accommodations at the North Rim. US 89A will remain open at the junction with SR 67.

ADOT also has set winter closure dates for these state highways in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, though snowfall may result in earlier closures:

  • State Route 473 between State Route 260 and Hawley Lake: Thursday, Dec. 7

  • State Route 261 between Eagar and Big Lake: Friday, Dec. 29

  • State Route 273 between Sunrise Park and Big Lake: Friday, Dec. 29

In addition, ADOT recently closed the upper unpaved section of State Route 366, which ascends Mount Graham in southeastern Arizona. This regular winter closure begins one-half mile past the Coronado National Forest’s Shannon Campground, at the end of the pavement.

Before heading out this winter, drivers should call 511 or visit ADOT’s Traveler Information Center at az511.gov for the latest highway conditions around the state. The website features camera images along state highways that give drivers a glimpse of weather conditions in various regions.

Annual closure of highway to Grand Canyon North Rim

PHOENIX – With the winter months rapidly approaching, the Arizona Department of Transportation will close State Route 67 between Jacob Lake (US 89A) and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

ADOT closes a number of highways every year  as part of the agency’s winter shutdown schedule due to significant amounts of snowfall these regions typically receive.

In addition to the SR 67 closure, highways such as state routes 261 and 273 in the White Mountains will close by Dec. 31, though they could close sooner depending on the weather.

ADOT reminds motorists heading into snow country to drive with caution and follow this advice:

Don’t let GPS and navigation apps replace common sense. When a highway is closed, a suggested alternate route involving an unpaved, unplowed road can lead you into danger.

Pack an emergency kit, a fully charged mobile device, extra clothing, blankets, water and snacks.

Slow down. Drive defensively. Be patient and allow additional time for your trip. Never pass a snowplow.

Leave sufficient space between your vehicle and those ahead of you. Give yourself plenty of room and time to stop or to avoid hazards.

Make sure your vehicle has plenty of fuel.

Check weather and road conditions before you travel. Let someone know your route.

Bring a small bag of sand (or cat litter) for wheel traction.
