PHOENIX – Beulah Boulevard will close overnights at Interstate 40 in Flagstaff for the next two weeks while crews pour new bridge decks and remove support structures.

On Monday, Oct. 1, northbound Beulah Boulevard will close where the highway passes under Interstate 40 nightly from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Wednesday, Oct. 3, and again from Tuesday, Oct. 9, through Thursday, Oct. 11. Traffic heading north on Beulah Boulevard into Flagstaff will need to head south on Beulah to the JW Powell intersection with Interstate 17 and take the interstate north into town.

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, southbound Beulah Boulevard will close under I-40 nightly from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 11, through Friday, Oct. 12. Southbound Beulah Boulevard will also close from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, to Saturday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 12, to Saturday, Oct. 13. Drivers wanting to head south will need to take I-17 south to the JW Powell Boulevard exit and then go north on Beulah Boulevard.

The southbound I-17 ramp to eastbound I-40 will also close from 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, to allow crews to pave the eastbound I-40 bridge over I-17. While it’s closed, drivers can continue on I-17 south to the JW Powell exit and come around to I-17 north and take the I-40 east exit.

The $10 million project includes replacing the I-40 bridge decks in each direction over Beulah Boulevard, immediately west of I-17, as well as the westbound bridge deck over I-17. The eastbound I-40 bridge over I-17 will get a new concrete surface.

The project will also increase the cross slope of the roadway over the renovated bridges, helping drain water from the road surface. It also includes guardrail and paving work.

PHOENIX – An Interstate 40 paving project east of Williams continues to move forward with crews completing work to rebuild 5 westbound miles of the freeway between mileposts 167 and 172 and preparing for a traffic switch Thursday, July 12, that will move traffic back to the westbound lanes, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Westbound I-40 traffic in this stretch has been using one eastbound lane, separated from eastbound traffic by temporary concrete barrier.

Also on Thursday, July 12, the westbound on- and off-ramps at Garland Prairie and Pittman Valley roads will reopen after being closed since May. In addition, the eastbound on-ramp and westbound off-ramp at Parks will close for a few weeks to allow crews to continue rebuilding a 1-mile section of I-40 in both directions near the interchange.

In a few weeks, crews will place concrete barrier on the westbound side of I-40 so both directions of traffic will use one lane in each direction while crews rebuild the eastbound lanes between mileposts 167 and 172. The eastbound on- and off-ramps at Garland Prairie and Pittman Valley roads will close for the next few months. The ramps at the Parks Road interchange at milepost 178 will reopen to help detour traffic.

Work on this 5-mile section of I-40 is anticipated to wrap up by the fall.

Meanwhile, crews continue to repave other portions of the highway between mileposts 162 and 179 from Cataract Lake to Parks. Crews will work until cooler temperatures arrive, then they will break for winter and return next spring to complete the work.

ADOT continues to improve pavement on other sections of I-40 and Interstate 17 in the Flagstaff area. Crews repaving northbound I-17 continue to progress toward Flagstaff making a smoother surface to drive on. Work at the I-17/I-40 interchange continues to move forward as falsework for bridge improvements has been put in place and the westbound I-40 bridge decks have been removed.

Work on the interchange is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, while paving along I-17 will break for winter and finish next summer.

With one of two routes between I-40 and Seligman closing today for a project replacing bridge decks, we want to make sure everyone seeking an Old Route 66 fix knows there's still a convenient route to and from the interstate.

ADOT has worked with the community on ways to direct I-40 motorists to Exit 123, which connects with the on the east side of town. That includes signage along the interstate, as described in this video about Seligman, this project and the partnership between ADOT and the area's business community.

While I-40 Exit 121, leading to the west side of Seligman, remains open, that won't provide a link to and from Seligman until the project is completed. And this project doesn't affect through traffic on I-40 or Route 66.

PHOENIX – Interstate 17 will close overnights at the I-17/I-40 interchange in Flagstaff for the next two weeks while crews set up support structures in order to replace the I-40 bridge decks.

Beginning Sunday, June 3, northbound I-17 will close where the highway passes under Interstate 40. The same section will close nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, June 8. Traffic heading north on I-17 into Flagstaff must exit on to I-40 east and use the Butler Avenue exit to come around to I-40 westbound and take the Milton Road exit into town.

On Sunday, June 10, southbound I-17 will close under I-40 nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, June 15. Drivers heading south out of Flagstaff must take I-40 west to the Flagstaff Ranch Road exit and come around to I-40 eastbound to take the exit for I-17 south.

The $10 million project includes replacing the I-40 bridge decks in each direction over Beulah Boulevard, immediately west of I-17, as well as the westbound bridge deck over I-17. The eastbound I-40 bridge over I-17 will get a new concrete surface.

The project will also increase the cross slope of the roadway over the renovated bridges, helping to drain water off of the road surface. It also includes guardrail and paving work.

I-17 / I-40 Project Map

By Ryan Harding / ADOT Communications

Those looking to escape the summer heat will soon have a smoother ride to Flagstaff.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project that will replace pavement along Interstate 17 northbound in higher reaches approaching Flagstaff, addressing damage the highway takes from winter freeze-thaw cycles, snowplowing and commercial vehicles.

In addition to repaving 28 miles from the Coconino County line to Interstate 40 (the dark orange line on the map above), crews are also rebuilding 2 miles of I-17 from the ground up between milepost 312 and 314. Crews have narrowed I-17 to one lane in this stretch, a restriction that will last through mid-summer. We're rebuilding the right lane first.

The project also includes replacing the bridge decks in each direction on the I-17 overpass at Willard Springs Road near milepost 326. Drivers can expect periodic closures of Willard Springs Road and ramp closures.

The majority of the work is expected to be completed by late fall, with additional work happening next spring.

In addition to I-17, ADOT is improving pavement along 35 miles of Interstate 40 in both directions in the Flagstaff area, addressing deterioration caused by snow and snowplowing, freeze-thaw cycles and heavy use by commercial vehicles. And ADOT is replacing the I-40 bridge decks over I-17 and Beulah Boulevard at the I-40 and I-17 interchange in Flagstaff.

Highway Sign

By David Woodfill / ADOT Communications

The shortest distance from point A to point B is a straight line. In the case of freeway-to-freeway interchanges, it's the usually the most direct path.

I-17 / I-40 detour Map

But if you're connecting from Interstate 17 northbound to Interstate 40 westbound in Flagstaff anytime soon, ADOT signs from I-17 will take you to 3 miles east on I-40 to turn around at the Butler Avenue interchange.

That's because the ramp from northbound I-17 to westbound I-40 is closed for a project upgrading the I-40 bridge decks over I-17 and Beulah Boulevard. The ramp is scheduled to reopen by the end of the year.

So please budget a little extra time if you're going this way.

Does your trip take you into Flagstaff via I-17 and Milton Avenue before you take I-40 west? No problem there. Among other options for reaching I-40 westbound, the ramp from I-17 southbound to I-40 westbound has no restrictions through most of this work.

PHOENIX – Work requiring closures and detours will start next week on the $10 million upgrade to the I-40/I-17 interchange that serves as the gateway to Flagstaff, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Starting Monday, April 9, the I-17 northbound to I-40 westbound ramp will close for the duration of the project. Traffic heading north on I-17 looking to head west on I-40 should take the ramp for I-40 eastbound and then exit at the Butler Avenue traffic interchange. From there drivers can head back west on I-40.

One-direction closures on Beulah Boulevard are anticipated to occur at various times overnight between mid-April and May and again in October. Traffic should use the I-17 and the JW Powell Boulevard interchange to get around the closure both north- and southbound.

I-17 will also require one-direction closures overnight for bridge construction. Closures are anticipated to occur overnight on various dates in May. During northbound closures, traffic heading into Flagstaff will need to take the I-40 eastbound exit and then use the Butler Avenue interchange to come back and use the I-17 northbound exit to head into Flagstaff.

Traffic heading out of town during southbound closures should take I-40 westbound to the Flagstaff Ranch Road interchange and come back to use the I-40 east to I-17 south ramp.

Intermittent closures of the I-17 south to I-40 eastbound ramp will also be required. Those closures are anticipated to occur from mid- to late-June, late July and late October.  Traffic looking to head east on I-40 leaving Flagstaff should take I-17 south to the JW Powell interchange and then head back north to I-40 eastbound.

This project includes replacing the I-40 bridge decks in each direction over Beulah Boulevard, immediately west of I-17, as well as the westbound bridge deck over I-17. The eastbound I-40 bridge over I-17 will get a new concrete surface.

The project will also increase the cross slope of the roadway over the renovated bridges, helping drain water off of the road surface. It also includes guardrail and paving work.

PHOENIX – With multiple paving and improvement projects happening in the Flagstaff area this year, the Arizona Department of Transportation wants to keep the public informed on progress and traffic restrictions with open houses this spring and summer.

Throughout April, work will begin on Interstate 40 west of Flagstaff with paving and road reconstruction between Parks and Cataract Lake in Williams and reconstructing the westbound lanes west of Williams between mileposts 156 and 161. Paving and reconstruction work will also begin on Interstate 17 northbound between mileposts 312 and 340.

Also, the I-40 bridges over I-17 and Beulah Boulevard at the I-40/I-17 interchange are being revamped, requiring ramp closures and detours around the interchange.

To keep the public up-to-date on these projects, ADOT will host open houses at its facility, 1901 S. Milton Road in Flagstaff, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  April 9, May 8, June 12 and July 10.

Project teams will present information and answer questions on the construction schedule and traffic impacts.

Friday Five: Spring snow, small boats and new pavement

March 30, 2018

By Caroline Carpenter / ADOT Communications

A lot has happened on Arizona’s highways this week. Our highways saw a snowstorm and even a lost boat. The Friday Five blog will give you a rundown of everything notable that transpired this week.

You can see what else others are sharing by following the hashtag #FridayFive on social media.

1. It seems like we’re announcing a new milestone in the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway almost every week. Above you can see a 2017 timeline of the progress. This week we announced that Southern Avenue has reopened in Laveen. The road was closed after Thanksgiving so crews could move than 450,000 cubic yards of earth without having to cross local traffic while building the southern half of the interchange, one of 13 on the 22-mile freeway.

2. A small boat was dropped in the middle of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway late Tuesday night. It caused many on Facebook to speculate why the boat may have ended up there.

3. Good news for those who frequently use I-10 to reach Tucson. In just 18 months, there will be three lanes in each direction on I-10 between Casa Grande and Tucson. The project begins next week and should be open to traffic by summer 2019.

4. A snowstorm on I-40 near the New Mexico state line caught some drivers off guard. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for unexpected weather changes when you’re traveling. The ADOT website has travel tips and a list of emergency items to keep in your vehicle.

5. Arizona's winter weather can wreak havoc on the roads. To address the area's many freeze-thaw cycles, snow, snowplows and heavy use by commercial vehicles, we're starting several pavement improvement projects on I-40 and I-17 in the Flagstaff area.

PHOENIX – Arizona Department of Transportation projects starting in the coming weeks will improve pavement along 182 lane miles of Interstate 40 and Interstate 17 in the Flagstaff area, addressing deterioration caused by snow and snowplowing, the large number of freeze-thaw cycles the area sees each year and heavy use by commercial vehicles.

With projects planned along 34 miles of I-40 west of Flagstaff and on 28 miles of northbound I-17 just south of Flagstaff, motorists should budget extra travel time and get the latest project information before leaving by visiting az511.gov or calling 511.

Beginning Monday, April 2, crews will start rebuilding the westbound lanes of I-40 west of Williams between mileposts 156 and 161. Before the start of the winter season, crews rebuilt the eastbound lanes in this stretch.

Once work resumes on the $34 million project, westbound traffic on I-40 will cross over the median on a temporary road and share lanes with eastbound I-40 traffic through the project area, with one lane of travel in each direction separated by a concrete barrier.

In mid-April, ADOT will start a pavement-improvement project on I-40 between mileposts 179 and 162 from Parks to Cataract Lake near Williams.

This $35.3 million project includes areas between mileposts 167 and 172 where crews will fully reconstruct the roadway. Because of this, traffic will cross over and share lanes with opposite traffic, separated by a concrete barrier, between Garland Prairie and Pittman Valley roads. Work will begin in the westbound lanes.

Crews will work from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers can expect lane closures through the project area.

In the next several weeks, a project replacing pavement on the northbound lanes of I-17 approaching Flagstaff will get underway, with crews working from milepost 312 to milepost 340 near the I-17/ I-40 junction. The project will reconstruct northbound I-17 between mileposts 312 and 314.

This $24.4 million project includes replacing the bridge decks in each direction on the I-17 overpass at Willard Springs Road, near milepost 326.

The majority of the I-40 and I-17 work is expected to be completed this fall, with additional work happening the following spring.

Also in April, restrictions will begin for work on the I-17/I-40 interchange in Flagstaff, revamping I-40 bridges over I-17 and Beulah Boulevard. This $10 million project is scheduled to wrap up by the end of the year.

Later this year, crews will return to put down the final layer of asphalt, known as friction course, on I-40 between Parks and Riordan from milepost 179 to 191. This will complete a $13.9 million pavement-improvement project that began last summer.

More information on these projects can be found at azdot.gov/projects.
