Stretch of eastbound I-10 in the East Valley will be closed

PHOENIX – A stretch of eastbound Interstate 10 in the East Valley will be closed this weekend, April 25-28, for work on the Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Other weekend restrictions are scheduled for freeway improvement work, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers should allow extra travel time and plan on using detour routes as needed while the following weekend restrictions are in place:

  • Eastbound I-10 closed between US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (April 28) for drainage work and lane striping. Southbound SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway) ramps to eastbound I-10 closed. Westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 closed. Eastbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143 closed. HOV ramps between I-10 and US 60 closed. Consider alternate routes and allow extra travel time. Detours: Consider using I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) or eastbound US 60 to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to reach I-10 beyond the closure. I-10 drivers in the West Valley also can consider using southbound/eastbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to reach eastbound I-10. Note: Some ramps will close starting at 8 p.m. Friday, including the eastbound US 60 off- and on-ramps at Mill Avenue. Eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road and the northbound SR 143 off-ramp at University Drive also closed this weekend. Note: Northbound 48th Street closed between Broadway Road and I-10 from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (April 28).
  • Arizona Avenue closed in both directions at Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Sunday (April 27) for widening project. The Loop 202 off-ramps at Arizona Avenue narrowed to one lane this weekend. Detours: Consider using McQueen or Alma School roads.
  • Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) on-ramp at Price Road closed from 11:30 p.m. Friday (April 25) to late June for reconstruction as part of freeway widening project. Detour routes will be available during the two-month ramp closure. Consider entering eastbound Loop 202 at Dobson or Alma School roads.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard closed in both directions at Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) from 1 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (April 28) for bridge widening work. Consider alternate routes. Detour routes include using the north- or southbound Loop 101 frontage roads (northbound to Bell Road or southbound to Raintree Drive).

Schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather or other factors. ADOT plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region.

Most projects are currently funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. Voters last November approved Proposition 479, extending the existing half-cent tax to fund future transportation projects in the Phoenix region.

While projects at the I-10 Broadway Curve, Interstate 17 just north of Phoenix and two locations along Loop 101 seem to be getting most of the news media's attention, ADOT has a no-less-impactful project underway on the Loop 202 Santan Freeway The end result will be increased capacity between Val Vista Drive in Gilbert and Loop 101 in Chandler, along with other improvements.

This week's episode of On the Road With ADOT catches you up by featuring two engineers leading the Loop 202 Santan Freeway project: Lionel Goy and John Hall. Spent a few minutes listening to their conversation with host Doug Nintzel and you'll learn how we're doing far more than adding lanes to safely connect people and improve the quality of life in the Southeast Valley.

Loop 202 Santan Freeway widening project

The much-anticipated project to add lanes and other improvements along Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) east of Loop 101 in Chandler and Gilbert started in early August. Here's a check-in with ADOT Resident Engineer Lionel Goy presented as questions and answers:

Lionel, what has the Santan Freeway Improvement Project team focused on so far with the initial construction work?

The first step for the project was to remove the worn top layer of asphalt pavement within the project corridor. That’s something I'm sure drivers have appreciated since this removed the rough pavement conditions that existed before. We have set up temporary concrete barriers to create work zones throughout the corridor to help keep the public and workers safe throughout the duration of the project. We have also started bridge widenings in key locations such as Arizona Avenue and Lindsay Road.

What will this Loop 202 project accomplish?

We're making improvements along eight miles of the Santan Freeway. These improvements include adding two general purpose lanes in each direction between the Loop 101 Price Freeway and Gilbert Road and one general purpose lane in each direction from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive. This project will also widen the overpass bridges, install new retaining and sound walls and make improvements to local streets crossings within the project corridor. As the project moves along there will be the need to close individual on- or off-ramps in stages, for approximately 60 days each time, for reconstruction that will widen the ramps. There are also a number of other items including lighting, sign and drainage system improvements.

What is a key recommendation for drivers who travel through the project area?

We’ll continue to need to implement weeknight and weekend closures and restrictions for these improvements throughout the duration of the project. So we appreciate everyone's patience over the next two years. I would ask drivers to please allow for extra travel time and track where restrictions are so you can take other routes when restrictions are in place. We also ask drivers to follow the posted speed limit within the project corridor and to stay alert so everyone can make it home safely.

Will a lot of the work take place in stages?

The prime contractor is responsible for laying out an overall plan for completing the project. So they will be focusing on working in different areas on various items in order to deliver the project efficiently and on time. I mentioned reconstructing ramps earlier. That’s an example of work taking place in stages because no two consecutive on- or off-ramps will be closed in the same direction at the same time. That way we can give drivers nearby detour options. The prime contractor will sequence the closure of the on- and off-ramps to meet these requirements.

As a new year begins, so will a new freeway project in the southeast Valley. Work on the addition of a new Loop 202 Santan Freeway interchange at Lindsay Road, east of Gilbert Road, will start this month.

To mark the start of construction, the town of Gilbert hosted a groundbreaking ceremony in the area near where new on- and off-ramps will be added along the Santan Freeway at Lindsay Road. Gilbert’s event team should be applauded for arranging and carrying out a socially distanced ceremony with precautions taken during the current health situation.

Officials from Gilbert, including Mayor Scott Anderson, spoke about the work of various agencies over time to make the project a reality as well as the benefits that a new interchange will provide for local drivers and the town’s economic development opportunities.

ADOT’s State Engineer Dallas Hammit also took part in the groundbreaking and focused his remarks on how this project is an example of partnering and cooperation between local, regional, state and federal agencies.

Over approximately the next year, ADOT will now manage a $21.7 million project to add the Lindsay Road interchange. Completion is anticipated in early 2022. Other improvements include the widening of the westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Gilbert Road and eastbound off-ramp at Val Vista Drive and construction of a new westbound frontage road between Lindsay and Gilbert roads.

Gilbert will complete local street improvements in the area. Both ADOT and Gilbert will provide project updates, including traffic restriction reports, as the construction moves forward. Minimal restrictions are expected along Loop 202 during the course of the project since much of the work will take place away from the freeway’s lanes. We urge drivers to use caution and to always watch for workers and equipment in freeway or local street work zones.
