PHOENIX – Having insurance for your car, truck or other motor vehicle isn’t just a wise idea, it’s the law. Now the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division has added two options to help customers report their insurance information online at ServiceArizona.com.

The Insurance Update is free and allows customers to electronically provide information regarding their insurance coverage directly to MVD. Insurance companies are given seven days by law to update policy information when changes such as cancellations or renewals occur. On those occasions when there may be a lag in that reporting time from an insurance provider, this online option will help customers with valid insurance to immediately update their MVD record and avoid a suspension.

The update tool is easy to use and asks for information that is found directly on an insurance card.

In addition to the Insurance Update, the Reinstatement Function will allow customers to reinstate vehicle insurance that had been previously canceled or lapsed. The function will determine eligibility for reinstatement, make real-time updates to the MVD customer database upon completion, allow the customer to pay the $50 fee for each vehicle reinstatement, and provide a receipt confirmation that indicates the registration has been reinstated.

TUCSON – Getting customers out of line and safely on the road doesn’t usually mean literally breaking down walls, but for one Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division office, it’s a way to continue making improvements for customers.

The Tucson Regional office, located southeast of downtown Tucson at 3565 S. Broadmont Drive, has been undergoing renovations to create a more open, orderly and customer-friendly layout. Completing this work will require a temporary two-day closure on Thursday, May 18, and Friday, May 19.

This location will re-open for regular business hours on Monday, May 22.

Customers who need to visit an MVD office on those days can go to either the Tucson East location at 1360 S. Stocker Drive or the Tucson North office at 7330 N. Shannon Road. There are also several Authorized Third Party offices available throughout Tucson.

For an interactive map of MVD and Authorized Third Party locations, please visit azdot.gov/mvd.

Customers who’ve scheduled an appointment for a road test or to obtain a Voluntary Travel I.D. on either May 18 or 19 will be contacted by phone to arrange an appointment at another MVD location or to change the date.

More than half of MVD transactions require no office visit and can be done online at ServiceArizona.com.

PHOENIX – It’s goodbye to guesswork. If you need to take a road test to get your driver license, the number of available online appointments at Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division offices just went up more than 30 percent.

There are now more than 900 daily appointments available statewide every business day at the MVD offices that conduct road tests. Of those, more than 600 are available at locations in metro Phoenix and Tucson – the busiest areas for MVD.

Those numbers represent the full capacity for road testing based on MVD hours of operation and the time it takes to perform a road test, which is typically between 15 and 30 minutes.

“The MVD began offering online appointments for road tests in 2016, and it’s been a tremendous success,” MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said. “One of our goals in 2017 was to fully implement this program so that people who need to take a road test can go to one of our locations with the confidence that they’ll get it done at a time that’s convenient for them. This is all about serving our customers well, making the MVD offices run more efficiently and fulfilling our vision to get people out of line and safely on the road.”

Scheduling an online appointment is as easy as going to servicearizona.com, clicking on the “MVD Office Appointments” button and selecting a time and location for the road test. Not all MVD offices conduct these tests, but locations are well distributed throughout Arizona.

MVD will still serve walk-in customers for road testing based on availability that may be limited due to high demand.

PHOENIX – You like them. You really like them. Kiosks, that is.

The humble self-service kiosk, found at many Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division offices as well as several city court locations statewide, has reason to be proud. The handy device is getting more popular by the day.

“We want to get people out of line and safely on the road, and that means even if you visit one of our MVD offices you may be there for just a few minutes if you use a kiosk,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “More than half the transactions that most people need to do with MVD can be done at a kiosk or online at no extra cost. The great thing is, when you use these options you get more of your time back.”

In February 2016, there were 21,991 kiosk transactions compared to 36,899 in February of this year. In that time frame, three more city court kiosk locations were added, bringing that total to seven, and cash kiosks were added to many MVD offices statewide. MVD office employees are also encouraging more people who come in to consider using a kiosk for convenience. In addition, kiosks have the same capability as MVD’s online portal, ServiceArizona.com, which is available to customers 24 hours a day every day.

Vehicle registration renewal continues to be the most popular kiosk transaction with more customers using kiosks for that transaction than any other. A similar upward trend appears for transactions such as getting a duplicate driver license or ID, change of address, obtaining a three-day permit, ordering a specialty plate and several others.

Increased kiosk use even helps customers who aren’t using them. Using a kiosk means avoiding a visit to a service window, which frees up more MVD Customer Service Representatives to help customers who may need to get a photo, take a road test or have title documents processed. Using employees more efficiently in this way contributes to lowering wait times at MVD locations. In 2016, those wait times in urban offices went down an average of 20 minutes.

PHOENIX – Did you know there is no “DMV” in Arizona?

It’s true, in Arizona it’s known as the Motor Vehicle Division – or MVD for short – and it’s part of the larger Arizona Department of Transportation.

That’s important to customers for a big reason: Doing a web search using “DMV” will often direct you to websites that aren’t affiliated with Arizona’s MVD. That’s why Arizona drivers who need to renew their registration, order a specialty plate, file a sold notice, get a replacement driver license or ID and many other transactions available online should only use ServiceArizona.com.

“ServiceArizona.com is a great way to get people out of line and safely on the road because it’s available to people 24 hours a day, every day of the year,” MVD Director Eric Jorgensen said.

He added, “People need to know that ServiceArizona.com is the only website authorized to do MVD transactions. Customers should beware of misleading or scam websites, some of which may ask you to pay additional fees for online services, which ServiceArizona.com will never do.”

Some unauthorized websites go beyond claiming to offer a service. There are sites that are merely attempts to obtain sensitive personal information that can be used to commit fraud or identity theft. Additionally, MVD does not offer services through phone solicitation. The only legitimate sources for MVD customer transactions are ServiceArizona.com, MVD offices, U.S. mail and Authorized Third Party offices.

MVD maintains a website for general inquires and frequently asked questions at azdot.gov/mvd.

PHOENIX – In a digital world there is still plenty of room for tradition, and the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division is no exception.

Cash is king in many households, and the MVD is now making it possible for more customers to handle transactions that way by adding ServiceArizona kiosks that accept cash transactions to 22 MVD offices throughout Arizona.

Kiosks have been an MVD fixture for a number of years, but until recently they could only accept credit or debit cards. Offering the cash option has created another convenience that’s proving to be very popular with customers.

“There’s been a noticeable increase in kiosk usage since we implemented the cash option,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “Compared to a year ago at this time, the kiosk usage has increased more than 50 percent. Part of that is due to higher overall customer awareness of kiosks, but there’s been a definite uptick in usage since the cash kiosks were put in place. It’s a continuation of our vision to get people out of line and safely on the road.”

Cash kiosks handle all denominations of paper U.S. currency and are able to make exact change. The machines also accept personal checks.

More than half of MVD transactions can be performed at a kiosk or online at ServiceArizona.com for no additional fee. Among the many transactions available are: vehicle registration renewal, ordering a specialty license plate, getting a replacement license or ID, filing a sold notice and obtaining your motor vehicle record.

New verification method means veteran specialty plates may be ordered online

January 25, 2017

PHOENIX – Ordering a veteran specialty license plate no longer requires standing in line at an Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division office. With the introduction of a new electronic affidavit system to verify a veteran’s status, plates may now be ordered at ServiceArizona.com, skipping the office visit.

“As MVD continues to be ahead of the curve by improving customer service, this is one of the more gratifying changes we’ve made,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “MVD is proud to provide these plates to honor our veterans, and it’s very important to make it as easy as possible for our customers get out of line and safely on the road.”

Under state law, only veterans and their immediate family members may apply for a veteran plate. Until now, this plate could only be ordered in person at an MVD or Authorized Third Party location where the applicant would have to show veteran status documentation.

To allow for online ordering, MVD developed an electronic affidavit system that the applicant must initial before the transaction can be completed. MVD has also established an auditing compliance system to review applications to ensure that only those who are legally eligible receive the plate.

Each month, more than 1,200 applications for these plates are processed at MVD offices. Allowing this transaction to be done online will not only allow customers to order the plate at their convenience, but will reduce the amount of customer traffic at MVD offices.

In fiscal year 2016, veteran plates generated just over $1.2 million for a special veterans fund administered by the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services.

October 11, 2016

PHOENIX – A record 45,294 Arizonans registered Monday to vote in the general election through ServiceArizona.com, the customer website offered by the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division.

Another 18,576 registered to vote on Sunday through ServiceArizona.com, with use beginning to spike during that evening’s presidential debate.

Demand was so great as Monday’s deadline to register loomed that ADOT worked with IBM, the provider behind ServiceArizona.com, to increase capacity.

“We take our role in the voter registration process seriously and are dedicated to ensuring all voters can exercise their right to register at their convenience,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said.

ServiceArizona.com’s previous one-day record for voter registrations was 36,532 on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, the deadline to register to vote in that year’s general election.

Using ServiceArizona.com via computer, smartphone or tablet, Arizonans can register to vote for the first time or update their voter information such as home address, political party preference, early voting status and other information.

Once a person completes the process either online or in person, their information is sent to the Secretary of State’s Office, where it is recorded and shared with county election offices. Since 2002, ADOT’s Motor Vehicle Division has facilitated nearly 6 million voter transactions online and at MVD offices.

“Our long-standing partnership with ADOT’s Motor Vehicle Division benefits Arizona by allowing more people to become voters and enabling current voters to update their information in the most convenient ways possible,” Secretary of State Michele Reagan said. “It’s great to see the number of registered voters grow, and I’m optimistic this will translate into higher turnout on Election Day.”

PHOENIX – A driver license verification program used by the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division now makes it possible to request Social Security card replacements online through the Social Security website and simplifies the already-existing process of getting a person’s identifying information verified when making a major purchase or obtaining a loan.

“We are always looking for ways to better serve our customers, get them out of line and on the road safely, and this is one more tool that helps us reach that goal,” Motor Vehicle Division Director Eric Jorgensen said. “This is a real game-changer for making essential services more accessible and adds another element for protecting sensitive ID information.”

MVD has aligned with the nonprofit American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to offer the Driver License Data Verification service. This electronic system verifies a person’s driver license attributes such as name, address, birthdate, license expiration date and eye color, then confirms their validity to whichever entity is making the request.

With this program in place, Arizona is among 15 states and the District of Columbia offering online Social Security card replacement service through the Social Security Administration website at ssa.gov/ssnumber. Arizona driver license holders can create an account on this site and follow the procedure to get a replacement card, avoiding a trip to a Social Security Administration office.

The secure data-verification process also streamlines the current process used by banks, retailers and government agencies for verifying a person’s identity. When someone applies for a bank loan or makes a major purchase, this electronic system eliminates paperwork that may takes days to process by moving that secure process online.

This is done in real time, which means information can be verified more rapidly and while the customer is present.  Once the procedure is complete, the participating entity will be told if the ID attributes match or if there is a problem. The data is held only for the amount of time needed to process the verification.

It’s another example of MVD helping customers conduct more transactions online. Through ServiceArizona.com, Arizonans can conduct offer more than 20 motor vehicle transactions such as vehicle registration renewal and ordering replacement driver licenses and specialty license plates, with more to come.
