Work slated to begin Oct. 11 on US 191 Chinle - Lukachukai Wash Bridge Project

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin working this month on four bridges along US 191 between the communities of Many Farms and Rock Point on the Navajo Nation.

The following four bridges will either be replaced or rehabilitated as part of the project: Chinle Wash Bridge (milepost 470), Agua Sal South Bridge (milepost 476), Agua Sal North Bridge (milepost 480) and Lukachukai Wash Bridge (milepost 488).

ADOT advises drivers to plan ahead for possible delays while the following traffic restrictions will be in place:

  • North- and southbound US 191 will be narrowed to one lane only with alternating travel weekdays in November 2021 and continuing through the end of 2022.
  • Traffic will be controlled by a temporary traffic control signal.
  • Drivers need to be prepared to slow down and stop in the work zone and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place.

The project will include replacing the existing Lukachukai and Agua Sal North bridges, rehabilitating the Agua Sal South and Chinle Wash bridges and other related work.

During construction, lane restrictions may be needed for crews to safely work on the roadway. As a result, drivers should expect slower traffic and delays. Details regarding traffic restrictions will be updated and posted on the project web page.

The project will span over two construction seasons and crews will work through winter with bridge demolition and foundation work.
