This alert extends the temporary driveway closures planned to end on Oct. 16. Long-term north- and southbound lane restrictions continue through spring 2027.
The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for continued temporary driveway closures on State Route 85 to allow placement, compacting and curing of asphalt as part of a pavement preservation project in Ajo and Why.
Motorists can expect the following restrictions:
- Flagging operations in the project area: On-site flaggers and a pilot car will direct drivers through the work zone.
- Crews will require 15-minute partial closures at driveways and other access points along SR 85 through Friday, Oct. 23, to allow for the new asphalt to be placed.
- Motorists can expect rolling lane restrictions as crews work in multiple sections each day.
- A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
- A 25 mph speed limit will be in place within the work zone.

Ongoing restrictions: North- and southbound daytime lane restrictions on SR 85 between Elota Avenue (milepost 42) and milepost 60 will continue weekdays from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. through spring 2027. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph. A 12-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
Drivers should allow extra travel time, use caution, be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.
