Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), Interstate 10 to Loop 101 Widening Project
Contents
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments and the City of Chandler, has initiated a project to widen the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) between Interstate 10 and the Loop 101 (Price Freeway.) The project seeks to address growing traffic volumes and alleviate congestion in Chandler, Gilbert and the Southeast Valley.
Background
In June 2020 a design concept report was completed for Loop 202 between Interstate 10 and Val Vista Drive. Based on the findings in that report, the segment between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive was chosen to be widened first. That project is currently still under construction with completion expected in spring 2027. This next project will complete the final design for the segment between I-10 and Loop 101.
Project Elements
- Widening the existing freeway by one general purpose lane in each direction
- Widening the on- and off-ramps at Kyrene Road and McClintock Drive to accommodate new lanes
- Widening two eastbound Loop 202 bridges over 56th Street and Union Pacific Railroad
- Constructing retaining walls
Project Area
Timeline
The project is anticipated to complete final design by late spring 2027 and construction tentatively beginning late 2027.
