Historic and Scenic Roads
Historic and Scenic Roads
The state historic highway system includes all state routes and U.S. highways in Arizona built between 1912 and 1955, excluding the interstates. View the list of historic roads to see more information about the historic roads in Arizona.
In 1982, the state of Arizona enacted into law ARS §41-512 through ARS §41-518. These laws provide for the establishment of parkways, historic roads and scenic roads (PHSRAC). ARS §41-512 through §41-517 were later repealed and in 2018 the Arizona Legislature transferred the responsibility of designating parkways, scenic roads, and historic to the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names (ASBGHN).
In 1991, the federal government passed the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, which created the National Scenic Byways Program. The Program provided for the establishment of All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways.
The Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names (ASBGHN) evaluates proposals to designate a parkway, scenic road, or historic road. To learn more about the process of designating state and national scenic roads, or to submit a designation proposal, visit the ASBGHN website.
