The 10 most popular specialty license plate designs in 2023.

From sports teams to specific causes and activities, specialty license plates are a popular way for Arizona drivers to add customization to their vehicles while supporting local organizations. Most specialty plates cost $25 per year, $17 of which goes to a corresponding local charity or nonprofit group.

With the addition of the Empower, In Loving Memory and State Forty Eight in October 2023, there are now more than 100 specialty license plate designs available in Arizona, and more than 830,000 specialty plates were ordered or renewed during the 2023 calendar year.

Here are the 10 most popular specialty license plates in Arizona for 2023:

  1. Veteran’s Plates
  2. First Responder
  3. Arizona Highway
  4. Arizona Cardinals
  5. Military Support/Freedom
  6. Route 66
  7. Arizona State University
  8. University of Arizona
  9. Arizona Education
  10. Honoring Fallen Police Officers

The top-10 list for 2022 was similar to the year before, but 2023 saw a little bit of a shake-up. Arizona Education, which became available in June of 2022, and Honoring Fallen Police Officers pulled ahead to secure the ninth and tenth spots, respectively.

Golden Rule and “In God We Trust,” which were in the top 10 during the two previous years, fell off the list in 2023.

Of the eight new specialty license plates released in 2023, Alice Cooper's Solid Rock and Cancer Support for Families (released in July) and Empower and State Forty Eight (released in October) were the most popular. It’s too soon to tell, but we’re excited to see if any of them become popular enough to make the list for 2024.
