As Earth Day approaches, we’re inviting dedicated Adopt a Highway Volunteer groups to join a collective effort to beautify Arizona’s roadways during the weeks leading up to, or after April 22. Let’s celebrate by taking action in communities across our grand state.

Ways to get involved:

  • Current groups: Use your Adopt a Highway permit number to register a cleanup on or around Earth Day at azdot.gov/adoptahighway. Use the permit number again here to report activity after the cleanup.
  • New groups: Adopt 2 miles along a state highway in your area. Find information and forms at azdot.gov/adoptahighway

In 2025, volunteers reported picking up 2,600 pounds of trash on Earth Day. See the infographic included in this story for the accomplishments made over the entire year.

We’re all about tidying up. ADOT maintenance crews work continuously to remove trash and unsafe debris from along state highways. Volunteers supplement that work by cleaning adopted segments a few times a year. And they tell us there is nothing quite like the feeling of contributing to a cleaner environment.

Trash picking may not be for you, but you can still make a difference. We’re grateful to drivers who slow for individuals cleaning adopted segments and ADOT maintenance crews working along roadsides. Everyone’s participation matters to help keep roadsides safe and beautiful.

If you’d like to share a few Adopt a Highway group photos with us or need help adopting your own segment, please contact me at [email protected].
