Adopt a Highway

Check out our new cleanup events here and register with us to get outdoors to fill a bag or two. Join us for one or all of these upcoming events to help keep Arizona grand:

  • National CleanUp Day: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025
  • Groundhog Day cleanup: Monday, Feb. 2, 2026
  • Earth Day cleanup: Wednesday, April 22, 2026

Adopt a Highway volunteer events offer a means for civic-minded individuals and organizations to participate in outings with friends, family and coworkers. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, and those 12-18 must also be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Students are welcome to join us to fulfill service credits for class or graduation requirements.

Here are ways to participate in the events listed above:

  • Active volunteer groups register to let us know they plan to get out and clean adopted segments. Then group leaders report the number of volunteers and the number of trash bags filled to ADOT within three days.
  • One-day volunteers receive safety vests, bags and pickup sticks to use during cleanups. Sign up for yourself or with friends and family to pitch in for a few hours.

If you are interested in adopting a stretch of your own, we’ll do our best to find an available mile in your area. New adopters commit to a two-year permit and receive recognition signs installed in the group’s name at each end of the adopted mile, after the first reported cleanup. For more information and the steps to adopt, please visit azdot.gov/adoptahighway.
