New medical certification process for commercial drivers coming this June

Heads up to many of you commercial vehicle drivers out there. New federal regulations for interstate commercial drivers will take effect soon.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Medical Examiner’s Certification Integration is moving to an automated system in late June. As a result, FMCSA has issued a new rule about how Medical Examiner Certificates will be submitted. 

Beginning June 23, certified medical examiners on the National Registry will electronically submit results directly to FMCSA by midnight of the next calendar day. FMCSA will share those results with ADOT MVD. CDL drivers will no longer need to submit their own Medical Examiner Certificates to ADOT MVD. 

FMCSA will also provide MVD an electronic copy of the medical examiner's certificate information for all subsequent medical examinations in which the driver has been deemed qualified. Upon receiving an electronic copy of the medical examiner's certificate from FMCSA, MVD will post a medical qualifications status on the CDL driver’s record.

Drivers will no longer submit their MECs directly to MVD after June 22, 2025. Again, the new process will have examiners submit MECs electronically to FMCSA first and then it will be shared with the state from there.

Drivers should continue to ensure their medical certification is up to date and follow FMCSA updates. This change aims to streamline the process and ensure commercial drivers are medically qualified.
