We dislike roadside litter as much as anyone else. It's an unfortunate, messy and time-consuming byproduct of indifference and inattention.

On this week's episode of On the Road With ADOT, Adopt a Highway Program Manager Mary Currie explains how you can get involved and help keep Arizona grand.

In the Phoenix area, we're fortunate to have funding from the Maricopa Association of Governments, the regional planning agency, to contract for cleanups along freeways. On the many, many, many miles of state highway beyond the Valley, resources for litter cleanup must compete with more pressing maintenance needs such as fixing guardrails, repairing pavement damage and the like.

That's where ADOT's Adopt a Highway volunteer program comes in. Blue and white signs around Arizona honor people who have made a commitment to regularly cleaning up adopted highway miles.

Spend a few minutes with Mary and host Doug Nintzel and I hope you'll consider making a New Year's resolution to join Adopt a Highway. We have all the information you need to get started at azdot.gov/adoptahighway.
