Throwback Thursday: ADOT Sign Shop stays consistent

A man puts a sign in a machine.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Take the ADOT sign shop, for example.

The Sign Shop has been operating for decades and while advances in technology have delivered new machines that have sped up sign making, the overall process has remained the same.

Taking care of more than half a million signs a year in various shapes and sizes – some are as large as 16 by 30 feet – the ADOT sign shop helps keep the public informed when traveling on the state highway system.

The photos here show two men working to ensure the size of the sign is correct, a device ADOT now has that accurately makes the wording of the sign it needs to be.

So, the next time you see a sign to enter or exit a highway, directing to a rest area or one of the thousands of signs along Arizona’s highways, you’ll know where that sign came from: ADOT’s Sign Shop!
