PHOENIX – November 1997. Elton John again topped the charts with “Candle in the Wind.” Parents forked over $40 for a “Power Rangers Megazord” for the holidays, and “Harry Potter” was introduced to the world.

But Harry wasn’t alone in making his debut. The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division online service portal, ServiceArizona.com, opened for business 20 years ago this week.

ServiceArizona.com has proven its value many times over,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “In 20 years it has handled more than 115 million transactions allowing our customers to do business with MVD at their convenience, getting Arizona out of line and safely on the road.”

The service had humble beginnings, performing just one online transaction that first day. But it quickly grew, and in its first 10 years it had conducted a total 26 million transactions. By comparison, in fiscal year 2017, which ended this past June, ServiceArizona.com completed 11 million transactions in just that 12-month period.

More than half of the things you need to do with MVD can be done at ServiceArizona.com. The most popular transaction is vehicle registration renewal, which accounts for about 220,000 transactions every month. Other features include ordering a duplicate license or ID, getting a temporary operating permit, posting a sold notice, changing address information, getting a plate refund and many others.

In the past year, features have been added allowing customers to update their vehicle insurance information, reinstate canceled or lapsed insurance and making it possible for veterans to order their specialty plate online.

In 2018, more options will be added including the capability to complete vehicle titles online.
