Wireless Communication Facilities
Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in an effort to meet communications needs of the traveling public and to generate revenue for the improvement of the transportation system, issues leases to telecommunications providers. The Telecommunications (Wireless) Leasing Program, administered by the ADOT Broadband Office, processes requests to place wireless facilities (cell towers and antenna) within ADOT right of way. Other suitable locations covered under this program include Roadside Rest Areas, Maintenance Stations, Storage Areas and ADOT owned properties.
Consideration for preserving the operational safety as well as the functional and aesthetic qualities of the freeway system are of paramount importance. If these issues can be addressed to the satisfaction of the ADOT District Offices and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), wireless carriers, with restrictions, may propose to place their facilities within ADOT right of way.
All wireless facilities, whether located in interstate, freeway or conventional highway right of way, will require a lease and are issued an Encroachment Permit upon approval. For a copy of ADOT’s leasing document and fee schedule, please contact ADOT’s Broadband Coordinator.
