Motorcycle Endorsement Requirement

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, at least one registered owner of a motorcycle must have a valid motorcycle endorsement on their driver license to renew the motorcycle registration.

Who needs a motorcycle endorsement?

You need a motorcycle endorsement if:

You own a motorcycle registered in Arizona
Your registration renewal is due on or after Jan. 1, 2027
The motorcycle does not have a registered owner with a motorcycle endorsement

Motorcycles owned by a trust

For motorcycles owned by a trust, a trustee must be listed on the title and have a valid motorcycle endorsement to renew the registration.

Exemptions

This requirement does not apply to:

Motorcycles owned by a business
Motorcycles registered as Exclusively Off-Highway vehicles (off-road only)

Get a Motorcycle Endorsement

If you do not have a motorcycle endorsement, start the process before your next registration renewal.

You may be able to skip the written and skills tests by completing training through an approved motorcycle school and earning a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) card. Once you have your card, visit an MVD office or Authorized Third Party (ATP) provider to add the endorsement to your license.

If you do not complete an approved motorcycle training course, find a motorcycle testing location near you to complete the required testing.

Need More Time?

If your registration is due after Jan. 1, 2027, and you are enrolled in a qualified motorcycle training program, you may be eligible for a one-time 30-day temporary registration permit.

Registration Renewal

Before renewing your motorcycle registration, make sure:

At least one registered owner has a valid motorcycle endorsement
Your insurance information is current
Your mailing address is up to date so you can receive registration documents and license plate tabs by mail

Motorcycles operated on Arizona roads must be covered by Arizona liability insurance.

Most motorcycle registrations can be renewed through AZ MVD Now. You do not need a renewal notice to renew your registration. Multi-year registration options may be available. You may renew up to six months early. Be sure to renew by the due date to avoid late fees and penalties.

When you renew:

Your registration record is updated immediately
Your receipt serves as proof of registration
Registration documents and license plate tabs are mailed to you
Your registration document is available in your AZ MVD Now account
