New Arizona law requires updated ID photos every 16 years
Requirement matches with the AZ Travel ID expiration dates
PHOENIX – Starting this month, drivers may need to update their photo on file with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.
Beginning September 12, Arizona law, A.R.S. 28-3173, adjusts the time frame to update a photo from 12 years to 16 years.
The standard driver license typically expires when a person turns 65, but an updated photo is required to ensure the credential photo resembles you. The updated photo requirement will be the same if you have the standard Arizona driver license or the federally compliant Arizona Travel ID.
Many Arizonans have switched to the federally compliant Arizona Travel ID, which is valid for eight years and will satisfy TSA ID requirements at domestic airports, which the standard driver license does not. Nearly half of all credentials in Arizona are now federally compliant Arizona Travel IDs. The new timeframe will require a new photo at every other Arizona Travel ID license renewal.
Those with a standard driver license or ID and an old photo may receive a letter in the mail explaining it is time to update your photo.
Stop by an MVD office, or schedule an appointment for a convenient time in your schedule by visiting azmvdnow.gov. Even if you haven’t activated your AZ MVD NOW account, you can still schedule an appointment.
