Motorcycle license needed for registration renewals soon

PHOENIX – Beginning in 2027, a new law will require motorcycle owners that renew their motorcycle registration to have a motorcycle license or the endorsement on their driver license.

Arizona Revised Statute § 28-2014, which was updated this year, will require at least one of the registered owners of a motorcycle to have the motorcycle endorsement to legally operate a motorcycle on public roadways before renewing the motorcycle registration. 

The new requirement goes into effect on January 1, 2027. ADOT Motor Vehicle Division is announcing this new change early to ensure motorcycle owners have time to become compliant before their next motorcycle registration renewal. 

If the registration is due after this law takes effect, and the owner is enrolled in a qualified motorcycle training program, a one-time 30-day temporary registration may be issued. 

Motorcycles owned in a trust will need a trustee to be legally licensed to operate a motorcycle in Arizona in order to renew the registration. 

This new law does not apply to exclusively off-road motorcycles or motorcycles owned by a business.
