State Route 86 from Kinney Road to Santa Cruz River Study
State Route 86 from Kinney Road to Santa Cruz River Study
Completed 2016 - ADOT, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), initiated a corridor study along State Route 86 (SR 86) within the City of Tucson in Pima County, Arizona. The study limits extended approximately 5.5 miles across land under the jurisdiction of the City of Tucson and Pima County, from Kinney Road at milepost (MP) 166.3 to Holiday Isle Boulevard at MP 170.9. Holiday Isle Boulevard is located approximately 0.2 miles west of the Santa Cruz River.
The purpose of this study was to investigate concepts to accommodate projected regional increases in traffic volumes, recommend improvements and present a phased construction plan. SR 86/Ajo Way is a regional transportation route on the western edge of the Tucson metropolitan area, connecting Kitt Peak, Sasabe and other populated areas with the employment centers in Tucson. In recent years the Tucson urban area has started expanding to the west. Because of this growth SR 86 is experiencing a steadily increasing volume of commuter traffic between the developing residential areas to the west and the employment destinations in Tucson.
