Loop 101: 67th and 59th Avenues Traffic Interchange Improvements Study

Loop 101: 67th and 59th Avenues Traffic Interchange Improvements Study

Contents

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Maricopa Association of Governments, the city of Glendale and the city of Phoenix, initiated a study to evaluate improvements to the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) interchanges at 67th and 59th avenues.

The study evaluated potential transportation improvements at these interchanges to reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety and improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Transportation

At this time, no funding has been identified for design or construction of any improvements.

A separate ADOT freeway project to widen Loop 101 from 75th Avenue to I-17 and improve the 75th Avenue traffic interchange is in final design. Due to the timing of this project and the 59th and 67th avenue interchange study, it is not feasible to add the 67th and 59th Avenue traffic interchanges to the Loop 101 from 75th Avenue to I-17 widening project.

Study Elements Evaluated

  • Safety for roadway users
  • Future travel demand and anticipated traffic level of service
  • Potential environmental impacts and mitigation
  • Potential right of way acquisition and changes to property access
  • Conflicts with existing utilities
  • Improvements to accommodate pedestrians and bicycle users
  • Accommodations for transit routes and users
  • Interaction with Loop 101 improvements currently under design

Recommended Alternatives/Improvements

  • 67th Avenue Traffic Interchange (Two Alternatives)
    • Westbound Off-Ramp, Triple Left-Turn - This alternative would increase the number of lanes on westbound Beardsley Road from four to six to allow for two dedicated left turn lanes and a left through lane, increasing the left turn capacity from two to three lanes. 67th Avenue would be widened from seven to eight lanes on the bridge, and seven to nine lanes south of the eastbound Beardsley Road intersection. Eastbound Beardsley Road will also be widened from four to six lanes.
    • Triple Southbound Left-Turn with Dual Auxiliary Lanes - This alternative would increase the number of lanes on westbound Beardsley Road from four to six to allow for two dedicated left turn lanes, two through lanes and two right turn lanes. 67th Avenue would be widened from seven to eight lanes on the bridge, and seven to nine lanes south of the eastbound Beardsley Road intersection. Eastbound Beardsley Road would be widened from four to six lanes and Beardsley Road east of the 67th Avenue intersection will be reduced from two through lanes to one to allow three lanes on the Loop 101 on-ramp.
  • 59th Avenue Traffic Interchange (One Alternative)
    • Dual Northbound Left-Turn and Through Lanes - This alternative would increase the number of lanes on the east- and westbound Beardsley Road approaches to the traffic interchange from four to six. Northbound 59th Avenue approaching the traffic interchange would also increase from four to six lanes. The 59th Avenue bridge would be  widened from seven to eight lanes to increase the number of northbound lanes from three to four.
