UPDATED: The westbound Loop 101 closure originally scheduled April 17-20 has been postponed.
UPDATED: The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Deer Valley Road will be closed for approximately 50 days beginning 11:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19.
- Detour: Drivers may continue on the northbound frontage road from Deer Valley Road to enter northbound I-17 at Pinnacle Peak Road.
NEW: The north- and southbound I-17 ramps to westbound Loop 101 will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Sunday, April 19, and ending Wednesday morning, April 22.
- Westbound Loop 101 will be narrowed to two lanes between I-17 and 51st Avenue, and the westbound Loop 101 on-ramp at 27th Avenue also will be closed during this time.
- Detour: Southbound I-17 drivers may consider using Deer Valley Road to 35th Avenue to access westbound Loop 101. Northbound I-17 drivers may consider using Union Hills Drive to 51st Avenue to access westbound Loop 101.
North- and southbound 35th Avenue will be closed in both directions at Loop 101 from 10 p.m. Thursday, April 16, to 5 a.m. Friday, April 17, and again nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Monday, April 20, and ending Friday morning, April 24.
- Detour: Drivers may consider using the east- and westbound frontage road (Beardsley Road) to navigate around the closure.

Upcoming Loop 101 closure

Westbound Loop 101 will be closed between I-17 and 51st Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday, April 24, to 5 a.m. Monday, April 27.
- The following also will be in place during this time:
  - The westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue also will be closed.
  - The westbound Loop 101 ramps to north- and southbound I-17 will be closed.
  - The eastbound Loop 101 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane will be closed between 51st and 27th avenues.
Detour: Drivers may consider using Union Hills Drive to navigate around the closure.

Reminder: Ongoing lane closures

75th Avenue will continue to be narrowed to one through lane in each direction between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive through April.
- Detour: Drivers may consider using 67th or 83rd avenues to access 75th Avenue via Deer Valley Road or Union Hills Drive.
- Note: Some left turns will be restricted along 75th Avenue, and sidewalks may be closed intermittently.
The eastbound Loop 101 frontage road is reduced to one lane between 37th and 35th avenues through mid-April.

LONG-TERM RAMP CLOSURES

The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 75th Avenue is closed for approximately 60 days beginning 11:30 p.m. Monday, March 9.
- Detour: Westbound drivers may exit at 67th Avenue and travel north to Deer Valley Road or south to Union Hills Drive to reach their destination. Note: 75th Avenue will have ongoing lane restrictions between Loop 101 and Rose Garden Lane that are expected to end in April.
The eastbound Loop 101 on-ramp at 67th Avenue is closed for approximately 60 days beginning 11:30 p.m. Monday, March 16.
- Detour: Drivers may consider taking the eastbound frontage road (Beardsley Road) to 59th Avenue to access Loop 101.
The eastbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 59th Avenue is closed for approximately 60 days beginning 11:30 p.m. Monday, March 23.
- Detour: Drivers may consider exiting at 67th Avenue and using the eastbound frontage road to reach 59th Avenue

Overview

The project is widening Loop 101 between 75th Avenue and I-17 by one general-purpose lane in each direction to improve traffic flow on Loop 101 and the cross streets. Other improvements include widening bridges, modifying interchange ramps and frontage roads in some locations, adding a third southbound left turn lane onto Loop 101 at 75th Avenue, improving the system interchange ramp between westbound Loop 101 and northbound I-17 and resurfacing the roadway.

This project is included in the Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County and is funded through Prop 400, a countywide dedicated half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements approved by voters in 2004.

Project Elements

Adding one general purpose lane to the outside of Loop 101 in each direction between 75th Avenue and I-17.
Widening bridges at 51st, 35th and 31st avenues and constructing new retaining walls.
Modifying interchange ramps and frontage roads in some locations.
Interchange improvements at 75th Avenue to add a third southbound left turn lane onto eastbound Loop 101.
Adding a lane to the westbound Loop 101 ramp to northbound I-17.
Adding a new lane to northbound I-17 between Loop 101 and Pinnacle Peak road to accommodate the additional traffic lane from westbound Loop 101.
Adding or modifying noise walls in some locations where warranted.
Removing the worn asphalt and resurfacing the concrete pavement by diamond grinding.
Upgrading freeway and ramp lighting.
Modifying the existing freeway drainage system.
Replacing impacted landscaping.

What to Expect

Construction is expected to take approximately two-and-a-half years to complete.
Work will require lane restrictions and full closures on Loop 101, the interchange ramps and cross streets, and will occur primarily during overnight hours and weekends to minimize traffic impacts.
Long-term on- and off-ramp closures will be required (up to 60 days).
ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures to email subscribers and on the project web page.
Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

Schedule

The project began in late September 2024 and is expected to take approximately two-and-a-half years to complete.

Public Meeting

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the cities of Glendale and Phoenix, and the Maricopa Association of Governments, held an in-person public meeting in September 2024, to provide more information about construction of the upcoming widening project on Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) between 75th Avenue and Interstate 17.
