State Route 24

Contents

The Arizona Department of Transportation completed construction of the Interim Phase II section of State Route 24 (SR 24), also referred to as Gateway Freeway, in August 2022. This section includes approximately five miles of new freeway extending from Ellsworth Road in Maricopa County to Ironwood Drive in Pinal County. The completed project elements include:

  • Two paved lanes in each direction separated by a median
  • At-grade intersections at the following locations:
    • Williams Field Road
    • Signal Butte Road
    • Meridian Road
    • Ironwood Drive
  • Bridges over Ellsworth and Mountain roads
  • A drainage channel along the north side of the freeway
  • Signage, traffic signals, lighting and pavement marking

State Route 24 Ultimate Configuration

In July 2024, ADOT began the design phase for the ultimate buildout of SR 24 between Loop 202 and Ironwood Drive. This project is included in the Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan and is funded in part through Proposition 479, a dedicated half-cent sales tax for transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2024. The ultimate configuration design includes:

  • Four general purpose lanes in each direction between Loop 202 and Williams Field Road (road to be widened within the median)
  • Three general purpose lanes in each direction between Williams Field Road and Ironwood Drive (road to be widened within the median)
  • Bridges over Williams Field, Crismon, Signal Butte and Meridian roads
  • An additional lane will be added to westbound Loop 202 from SR 24 to Recker Road
  • An additional lane will be added to eastbound Loop 202 from Power Road to SR 24
  • An additional lane will be added to north- eastbound Loop 202 from SR 24 to Guadalupe Road
  • New connector ramps will be built between Ellsworth Road and Loop 202 and westbound SR 24 to northbound Loop 202

Timeline

Design began in July 2024 and is expected to take approximately one year to complete. A public meeting to present the final design plans is expected in spring 2025.

The potential future SR 24 extension to US 60 falls within Pinal County. The county will be the lead agency for a study to evaluate this extension, with participation by ADOT. The extension of SR 24 is not currently funded so there is no timeframe for when SR 24 might be extended to the east. For more information, visit: https://cleargov.com/arizona/pinal/county/projects.
