Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Navajo Nation, has initiated a pavement rehabilitation project along Interstate 40 near the communities of Chambers and Sanders (mileposts 331-342).

Work is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and be completed by fall 2027, with a winter hiatus.

Project Elements

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the pavement and create a smooth driving surface for motorists. The work will include:

  • Removing and replacing the top layer of pavement along 12 miles of I-40 from McCarrell Road to Querino Road.
  • Guardrail installation, drainage work, bridge repairs, new pavement markings and rumble strips, and other related work.

What to Expect During Construction

I-40 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction during construction. Drivers need to be prepared to make frequent stops when approaching the work zone, drive slowly when driving through the work zone and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place.

All lane restrictions are scheduled to occur nightly from Monday evenings through Friday mornings. No work is anticipated to occur on weekends and state holidays. Schedules and work hours are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.
