Overview

Project Cost: $6,500,000

The Arizona Department of Transportation is initiating a pavement life extension project on Interstate 40 through the city of Holbrook (mileposts 283-290). The 7-mile-long project is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed by late fall 2022.

 

Project Elements

The work consists of removing the existing top layer of pavement and replacing it with an asphalt-mix overlay, which is designed to protect the underlying pavement structure. The work also includes making spot pavement repairs prior to the placement of the overlay and other related work..

What to Expect During Construction

  • Drivers should plan for lane restrictions and reduced speed limits on I-40 as the pavement work is completed between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
  • A minimum of one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction throughout the project.
  • The traffic restrictions will be removed each day after work hours and during weekends.
  • No weekend work is anticipated at this time.

Schedules are subject to change because of weather or other unforeseen factors. Remember to slow down and use caution around construction workers and equipment.

Expect lane restrictions and ramp closures along I-40 in Holbrook beginning Sept. 19

Drivers should expect delays and follow electronic message signs for ramp closures

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following lane restrictions and ramp closures on Interstate 40 near Perkins Valley Road though Holbrook (mileposts 283 - 290) beginning Monday, Sept. 19:

  • East- and westbound I-40 will be intermittently reduced to one lane in each direction daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from Sept. 19, through Oct. 12.
  • The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.
  • Drivers should be prepared to slow down when approaching the work zone.
  • The traffic restrictions will be removed each day after work hours and during weekends.

RAMP CLOSURE SCHEDULE

  • Perkins Valley Road: eastbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 22
  • Hopi Drive: eastbound on- and off-ramps from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
  • Navajo Boulevard/SR 77: eastbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.
  • North Navajo Boulevard: eastbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 26.
  • North Navajo Boulevard: westbound on- and off-ramps noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26.
  • Navajo Boulevard/SR 77: westbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.
  • Hopi Drive: westbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28.
  • Perkins Valley Road: westbound on- and off-ramps from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.

As part of the $6.5 million project, crews are removing the existing top layer of pavement and replacing it with a new asphalt overlay, which is designed to protect the underlying pavement structure.
